نالattained المُنىwishes بِالفَضلthrough merit فَخرىFakhri باشاPasha
نال المُنى بِالفَضل فَخرى باشا
فيin ظلshade تَوفيقTawfiq وَأَحرزand won ماشاwhat he wished
في ظل تَوفيق وَأَحرز ماشا
Fakhri Pasha attained his wishes through merit,
Fakhri Pasha attained his wishes through merit,
in Tawfiq's shade, and won what he wished.
Under the auspices of Tawfiq, and achieved success.
وَنَظارةand the ministry العَدلjustice الرَفيعةexalted لَمdid not تَكُنbe
وَنَظارة العَدل الرَفيعة لَم تَكُن
تَرضىbe content سِواهanyone but him قَبلَbefore ذَلِكَthat حاشاfar be it
تَرضى سِواه قَبلَ ذَلِكَ حاشا
And the exalted Ministry of Justice was not
The exalted ministry of justice would accept
content with anyone but him before then—far be it!
None other before this, never!
لمwhy لاnot وَهَذاand this الشبلthe lion cub مِنfrom لَيثa lion لَهُfor him
لم لا وَهَذا الشبل مِن لَيث لَهُ
أَعداؤُهhis enemies فيin حربهhis war تَتحاشىshy away
أَعداؤُه في حربه تَتحاشى
Why not, when this lion cub comes from a lion whom
Why not, when this lion cub is from a fierce lion
his enemies shun in battle?
Whose enemies in war take pains to evade?
هُوَhe جَعفرJaafar ماضيfirm العَزيمةresolve صادقtruthful
هُوَ جَعفر ماضي العَزيمة صادق
أَنوارهhis lights فيin الحكمgovernance لاdo not تَتَلاشىfade away
أَنواره في الحكم لا تَتَلاشى
He is Jaafar, firm in resolve and truthful;
He is Ja'far of resolute determination and sincerity
his lights in governance do not fade.
Whose lights in governance do not diminish.
دامَتmay endure مَعاليهhis eminence وَطابَand may be sweet ثَناؤهpraise of him
دامَت مَعاليه وَطابَ ثَناؤه
بِمحافلin gatherings لاdo not تقبلadmit الغشاشاthe cheat
بِمحافل لا تقبل الغشاشا
May his eminence endure, and may praise of him be sweet
May his excellency endure and his praise be pure
in gatherings that admit no cheat.
In circles that admit no deceit.
وَلهُand for him يَدومmay endure حسينُهُhis Husayn متقلِّداًinvested
وَلهُ يَدوم حسينُهُ متقلِّداً
بِمَناصبwith offices العَلياءhigh rank مَهماfor as long as عاشاhe lives
بِمَناصب العَلياء مَهما عاشا
And may his Husayn endure for him, invested
And may his fair Husein remain invested
with offices of high rank for as long as he lives.
In the most eminent positions, for as long as he lives.
فَالشعرfor poetry كُنتI was تركتهI abandoned it لكنهbut it
فَالشعر كُنت تركته لكنه
فيin خاطِريmy mind لماwhen ترقّىhe rose in rank جاشاit surged
في خاطِري لما ترقّى جاشا
For I had abandoned poetry, but it
Poetry I had abandoned, but it
surged in my mind when he rose in rank.
Spontaneously overflowed in my mind
وَغَدوتand I began أُنشدI recite فيin الهَناءcelebration مؤرخاًmarking the date
وَغَدوت أُنشد في الهَناء مؤرخاً
بَدأbegan الودادaffection بمجدwith the glory of فخريFakhri باشاPasha
بَدأ الوداد بمجد فخري باشا
And I began to recite in celebration, marking the date:
And I came to chant in celebration, recording
Affection began with the glory of Fakhri Pasha.
