خَليليّmy two friends ماnot للفضلfor excellence وَالعلمand learning قيمةٌvalue
مَعwith الجَهلignorance فيin دارthe abode of العَناhardship وَالمَغارمِand burdens
My two friends, excellence and learning have no worth
Amid ignorance, in the abode of hardship and burdens.
وَماand not صاحبa possessor of العرفانknowledge فيهاin it كجاهلlike an ignorant man
أَتاهاhe came to it ذَليلاًabased مِنfrom بِلادthe lands of الأَعاجمnon-Arabs
And a man of knowledge there is not like an ignoramus
Who came to it abased from the lands of non-Arabs.
فَلَوfor if كانَthere were فيناamong us نَخوةٌpride عَربيةٌArab
لَمِلْناwe would turn عَلىagainst أَعدائناour enemies بِالصَوارمwith keen swords
For if we had Arab pride,
We would turn upon our enemies with keen swords.
فإنthen if نحنُwe متناwe died قبلbefore أنto نبلغwe attain المنىaspirations
عُذِرناwe would be excused ورحناand we would depart بالثناwith praise والمكارمand honor
Then if we died before attaining our desires,
We would be excused and depart with praise and honor.
وَإِنand if نَحنُwe أَنقذناwe rescued مِنfrom الجورoppression أَهلَناour people

And if we rescued our people from oppression,
We would triumph and gain eminence and spoils.

Is there not among you, people of Egypt, as among others,
A champion to look to in battle and resolute endeavors?
أَماare ... not? أَنتُمُyou كفءa match لابناءfor sons

Are you not a match for sons ...
And especially the wicked, those of mounting evil?

Are they not the most misguided of all beings? And indeed they are
The most abject of creatures on the day throats are cut.
مَضىالناسthe people passed on للنارto the fire وَاللظىand the blaze
فَقُلناso we said استرحناwe found relief مِنfrom
The people passed on to the fire and the blaze.
So we said, “We have found relief from ...”
فَجاءَthen came شقيٌّa wretch بَعدهُafter him لعذابناto torment us
وَماand not هُوَhe إِلاbut
Then a wretch came after him to torment us,
And he is nothing but ...
فَغلَّقthen he bolted أَبوابَعنوةdoors by force
وَشيَّدand he raised أَركانَthe pillars of الخَناlewdness وَالمآثمand sins
Then he bolted doors by force,
And raised the pillars of lewdness and sin.
وَأَضحىand he became عَلىto حُبlove of المَفاسدcorruption عاكِفاًdevoted
فَتبّاًso perdition لِهَذاto this one مِنof

And he became devoted to the love of corruption.
So perdition to this one, of ...

He indeed dealt unjustly and harshly,
And sprinkled with misery and crimes.
وَلَمand did not يَتّبعfollow فيسنةin a tradition
عَلىdespite جَهلهhis ignorance أَحياhe revived رُسومthe traces of المَعالمthe landmarks
And he did not follow in a tradition ...
Despite his ignorance, he revived the traces of the landmarks.
وَأَنسىand he made one forget بِماby what أَبدىhe displayed شَجاعةَthe courage of عَنترٍAntar
وَإِقدامand the daring of عمروAmr معْwith سَماحةthe generosity of حاتمHatim
And by what he displayed, he made one forget Antar’s courage,
And Amr’s daring, along with Hatim’s generosity.
وَأَحياand he revived كَماjust as المَأمونal-Ma’mun بِالحَزمwith resolve وَالوَفاand fidelity
رسومthe ways of الهَناhappiness وَالعلمand learning بَينamong الأَكارمthe noble
And like al-Ma’mun, with resolve and fidelity, he revived
The ways of happiness and learning among the noble.
وَلكنهbut he أَخطاerred لَدَيناin our eyes خطيئةًa sin
بِهاbecause of it صارَhe became جاراًa neighbor فيin اللَظىthe blaze للأراقمto the serpents
But he committed, in our eyes, a sin
For which he became a neighbor of serpents in the blaze.
فَلوif only أَنَّthat ليfor me جَيشاًan army بِهِwith which أَلتقيهمُI meet them

If only I had an army with which to meet them,
I would annihilate the farthest of them with a spear and keen sword,
وَطهرتand I would cleanse أَرضthe earth of اللَهGod مِنهُمof them بقتلهمby killing them
وَأَيدتand I would uphold دينthe faith of المُصطفىal-Mustafa (the Chosen One) خَيرthe best of هاشمHashim
And cleanse God’s earth of them by killing them,
And uphold the faith of al-Mustafa, the finest of Hashim’s clan,
وَأَمسيتُand I would become كَاللَيثlike the lion اِبنson of أَيوبAyyub مغرماًenamored
بضربof striking رقابnecks مِنهمof theirs وَمَعاصمand wrists
And become like the lion Ibn Ayyub, enamored
Of striking their necks and wrists.
فَياso, O آلpeople of مصرEgypt لاdo not تَنامواsleep وَدافِعواand defend

So, people of Egypt, do not sleep, and defend
The faith and the homelands against those who commit forbidden acts.
فَأَموالكمfor your wealth أَضحتhas become لَديهمin their possession غَنيمةًbooty
وَأَبناؤُكُمand your sons ماsomewhere بَينbetween عَبدٍa slave وَخادمand a servant
For your wealth has become booty in their possession,
And your sons are either slaves or servants.
وَمِنand from بعدafter ماthat كُنتُمyou were شُموسَsuns of مَعارفٍknowledge

كَسفتمyou were eclipsed وَأَصبَحتُمand you became شَبيهlike البَهائمbeasts
And after you had been suns of knowledge,
You were eclipsed and became like beasts.
وَعشتمand you lived بذلّin abasement بَعدafter جاهٍprestige وَعزةٍand honor
وَدارَتand turned عَلَيكُمupon you دائِراتcalamitous turns المَظالمof oppression
And you lived in abasement after prestige and honor,
And the calamities of oppression came round upon you.
فَلاso do not تَغفَلواneglect عَنconcerning قَطعcutting off دابرthe last remnant of نسلهمtheir offspring
فَقَدfor indeed ملأواthey filled بِالفسقwith wickedness كُلall المَلاحمbattlefields
So do not neglect to cut off the last of their offspring,
For they have filled all battlefields with wickedness.
