    Come, give me drink from the cup, O brother of the full moon:

    Chilled wine, aged in a deacon's jar.

    And pass it to me sparkling, just as I desire,

    Upon a carpet of blossoms and myrtle.

    فَما عَلَيك إِذا ما طفت مِن باس

    And make the rounds with its goblets while night descends;

    For no harm will come to you if you make the rounds.

    And do not waste a chance to sip it when it arises,

    For in it lies relief from care and distress.

    And behold it now unmixed—or, if you mix it,

    Then with the sweet saliva of the healing fawn's carnelian lips.

    For if its sun appears radiant in the cup

    To a denier, his hard heart softens through it.

    And none has partaken of it but a youth renowned

    Among people for his loyal and forbearing character.

    And had Baqil seen its lights, he would have brought forth

    A meaning shining like a firebrand.

    And the coward, when he tastes it, gains a footing

    Firm as a mountain in his war against the slanderer.

    وَهيَ الدَوا للحَشا مِن داء وَسواس

    It is the cure for one whose body sickness has wasted;

    And it is the heart's remedy for the sickness of obsessive doubt.

    وَقُربها جَنة النشوان وَالحاسي

    And she is the one whose dower is souls, if sought in marriage;

    And nearness to her is paradise for the tipsy and the sipper.

    So gallop your horses in the arena of her courtyard,

    And charge through her taverns under cover of predawn gloom.

    And if one in authority forbids her, say: “Bound is

    My soul to wine, a wine-seller, and a swaying beauty.”

    My death is my life through her; my abasement before her splendor

    Is my honor and my safety from terror and destitution.

    Never shall I turn my gaze from her, for in her

    I find solace from my loneliness in the darkness before dawn.
