    How long will it befriend longing, when gentleness is due—

    a heart throbbing from the rejection it has met?

    A heart steadfast as Radwa, save that it

    endures love's perils while melting away.

    A heart against which Time spurred its riders,

    then turned back, those mounts availing it nothing.

    It kept appearing, now in the garb of reproaching women,

    and now you would see it return as a suitor.

    So I bore with it gently until I mastered it,

    and it came to be addressed by me: 'O boy!'

    And even the rock, but for its purity, would not, through the compassion

    of my prince, have its faults forgiven.

    And how could I requite it for its former deeds,

    when I know for certain that today it is repentant?

    Yet I am the one beholden, for they have been ennobled—

    the offices of this age—by Ibrahim's eminence.

    A prince for whom their fairest was sought in marriage; yet

    he deemed her no equal, and grew proud, though desirous.

    فَتاقَت كَمُشتاق إِلَيهِ المَراتب

    And he broke with her, seeking no union with her;

    so the ranks yearned for him like a longing lover.

    And they returned, hastening to him despite an envier,

    and from among them fair, budding-breasted maidens were led to him as brides.

    O my lord, here, from her bower, is a Hashimite maiden,

    generously offered by a keen mind in praise of you.

    فَقابل مَحياها بِما أَنا طالب

    Her dower, Ibrahim, is nothing but your acceptance of her;

    so greet her countenance with what I seek.

    بِطلعتك الحَسنا تُضيء الكَواكب

    So may you ever rise to the heights of good fortune;

    through your fair countenance the stars shine.
