Do not trust Time, for Time is crooked.
How often has Time parted brothers once united!

How often has it brought the free man humiliation after his glory,
and made the slave a sultan after bondage!

لَياليَ الوَصل تعنيفاً وَهجرانا
So behold its treachery toward us: it exchanges our
nights of union for harsh rebuke and estrangement.

I never thought the beloved would grow distant; and if
I reproach my Time, I find Time ever treacherous.
