Is it not a wonder that a lion

Is challenged by dogs upon the battlefield?

    لَهُ يَومٌ يَشيب بِهِ الغراب

    And a dull-witted bear covets the sanctuary;

A day awaits him that would turn the raven gray.

And a loathsome hyena seeks to fight him,

And an ape whose nature is backbiting,

And a sluggard who urinates upon a bed

And claims to be the dreaded leopard,

    And a base, inexperienced jackal,

Whose very sight brings division and ruin,

And a cheetah asleep to all that is good,

Whose repulsiveness makes wide spaces narrow,

And a mangy monkey whose hands were broken,

And his feet too, and torment befell him,

And a hairless wolf whom even

The feeble sheep do not fear, whom none dreads,

    And an odious, coarse-natured swine,

Whose uncleanness is recorded in the Book,

And upon his hideous form, each evening,

Day after day, calamity rains down.

    تَزيد فَلَيسَ يَحصرها حِساب

    He has traits of every loathsome kind;

They multiply, and no reckoning can encompass them.

And suffice it that he is like the raven of parting:

He caws to conceal his dung.

And a disheveled, filthy, loathsome mongoose,

Who trembles in awe of the lion,

And a wild boar for whom the wilderness has grown cramped,

For all its breadth, and a door is barred against him.

A little dog incites them in the fray

Against a lion before whom necks bow.

And he boasts of hypocrisy, not knowing

That the Fire is the sinner's abode.

So, son of a little bitch, you shall never escape,

While spears are always hurled after you.

And you, fool, wrong a forbearing man,

And punishment indeed gives the wolf his fill.

And you laugh to hear the lute at night,

Yet from it comes an outpouring of tears.

And in the sanctuary, after the revelries, you seclude yourself

With a dusty, filthy, despised spiny-tailed lizard.

Had they caught you both in a bed of shame,

Today the earth would lie over you both.

Do you claim, you base wretch, that a fool

Will attain glory for as long as clouds endure?

Indeed, by God, you are astray,

And you will see when the veil is lifted.

Then neither child nor wealth will shield you

From the fires, if repentance is hard to attain.

So if you do not awaken after this,

Then do not despair if your wailing lasts.

And I have nothing but an old sandal

For a temple over which spittle has flowed.

Now I have given you counsel; let there be no blame

Upon me if I slap you, nor any reproach.

For you have long harbored hatred,

    While affection stood unveiled.

And all this is only for the sake of a spiny-tailed lizard,

A vile one, with mist over his eye.

He was reared in the lion's den, till at last

He came of age, and the wolves feared him.

But in ignorance he went wrong in his deeds,

So the lion turned against him.

And cast him out for his baseness, leaving him

With flies settling upon his filth.
