A blazing fire for a slandering, miserly hypocrite,

    Envious, vile, criminal, and false-hearted;

Brutish, baseborn, sinful of heart, a transgressor,

    Bitterly contentious, a renegade from the upright faith;

    دَنيّ غَبيّ أَبكمٍ غَيرِ ناطق

    Abject, cowardly, infatuated with leadership,

    Base, stupid, mute, unable to speak;

Vile, tiresome in spirit, dull-witted, feeble-minded,

Contemptible, leading others astray, trusting in falsehoods.

He sprang from a scoundrel, a thief, and a corrupter,

And came forth loathsome, from a loathsome man and a thief.

He tried to attain high honors through his arrogance—

Take heed: he is harsh and thick of elbow.

Perdition to him—a pretender, though ignorant,

A miser, an inveterate liar, embracing idle meddling.

And misery to him, a stammerer and a stammerer's son,

Who thinks himself peerless among mankind in the eastern lands.

An ignoramus like himself invited him on a journey

To Mount Sinai, with a matching dullard.

So he went there unwillingly, provisioning himself

With the price of a boar as dark as night.

And in the ceremonial procession he remained regretful,

With the regret of a sorrowful, dejected man at parting.

For, when he was walking by a lake

With the caravan, an unexpected arrow bloodied his foot.

Then he began to mourn himself for his affliction,

Like a raven croaking in the darkness of night.

So tell the man who blames me for censuring a fool:

Leave off reproach, and you will escape dire straits.

And beware of approving praise of a fool among mankind,

Who came boasting falsely of his tricks.

For no thanks are due to one who abandons his mother

Full of sorrows from hunger ever at her side.

For this is forbidden in the Book,

Yet every braying fool declares it lawful out of ignorance.

And the aim of this invective, at every gathering

To which I have been invited, is only to reveal the facts.

Has he no feeling, if he is a man of merit?

Is he not, like other people, sprung from gushing water?

Yes, he comes from a vile, lowly people,

Whose dwellings are a refuge for every hypocrite.

So if he desists from his falsehood and deceit,

We will restore him with gracious, fitting pardon.

Otherwise, we will slap him on the face and nape,

And bear down on his ribs with hammers,

And heap upon him rebuke, deterrence, and a curse,

If he does not recognize the rights of fellow creatures.
