لَما بَدا البُغض وَزال الحُبُّ

مِن خائن لَم يُجدِ فيهِ العَتْبُ

مِن خائن لَم يُجدِ فيهِ العَتْبُ

When hatred appeared and love vanished

When hatred appeared and love departed

From a faithless man with whom reproach availed nothing,

From a traitor with no fault to be found

تَرَكت قَلبي عِندَه مقيداً

تَرَكت قَلبي عِندَه مقيداً

وَرحت بِالجسم وَدَمعي صبُّ

وَرحت بِالجسم وَدَمعي صبُّ

I left my heart with him, bound fast,

I left my heart chained to him

And went away in body, my tears streaming.

And went away, my body and tears pouring

وَقُلت مُذ فارقته مُؤرخاً

وَقُلت مُذ فارقته مُؤرخاً

فارقته فراق مَن أُحبُّ

فارقته فراق مَن أُحبُّ

And when I parted from him, I said, marking the date:

And I said, since I left him and marked the date

I parted from him as from one I love.

I parted from him with the parting of one I loved
