هاتbring it اِسقِنيgive me a drink مِنfrom ريقsaliva ثَغرٍa mouth حاليsweet
فَلطالماfor so often الهجرانُestrangement غَيَّرchanged حاليmy state
Bring me a drink of the saliva of a sweet mouth.
Give me a drink from your sweet lips
For estrangement has so often changed my state.
For separation has long changed my state
وَلطالماand so often سهرَتstayed awake لبُعدِكbecause of your distance مقلتيmy eye
حَتّىuntil رَثىpitied ليfor me فيin الهَوىlove عذّاليmy reproachers
And so often my eye has kept vigil because you are far away,
And sleeplessness has long tortured my eyes
Until my reproachers pitied me in love.
Until sorrow lamented my passion's fate
وَغَدوتُand I became مِنfrom فَرطexcess الصَبابةardent longing لاnot يُرىis seen
منيof me إِذاwhen ناديتI called out غَيرُexcept خَياليmy phantom
And through excessive longing I have become unseen,
I've become from intense love no more than a phantom
Save for my phantom when I call out.
No one sees me when I call but my shadow
فَاِرحمso have mercy وَجُدand be generous واعطفand show tenderness عليّtoward me وَداوِنيand heal me
مِنfrom علّتيmy illness بَعدafter الجَفاestrangement بِوصالwith reunion
So have mercy, be generous, show tenderness toward me, and heal me
Have mercy, be kind, show me favor
Of my illness, after estrangement, with reunion.
And cure me of my sickness after disdain, with union
فَلَقَدfor indeed صَبَرتI endured عَلىin the face of الهَوىlove وَهَوانهand its humiliation
لَمّاwhen رُميتُI was struck مِنby النَوىseparation بِنبالwith arrows
For I have endured love and its humiliation
For I have been patient with passion and its humiliation
When I was struck by separation's arrows.
When I was struck by arrows from the beloved's glances
وَحملتُand I bore كُلَّall الضَيمinjustice مِنكَfrom you لجيرةfor neighborly closeness
فيin القَلبthe heart فُزتُI won بِهاit فلستso I am not بِساليforgetful
And I bore every wrong from you for the closeness
And I have borne all the injustice from you as a neighbor
I won within the heart; I am not one to forget.
In my heart, so I excelled at it and am no weakling
كَيفَhow السلوّforgetting وَقَدand indeed نَزلتI lodged بِساحةin a courtyard
مَعwith حافظHafiz أَبهىthe fairest الوَرىmankind المفضالthe munificent
How could I forget, when I have lodged in a courtyard
How can there be joy when I've arrived at the field
With Hafiz, the fairest of mankind, the munificent?
With Hafez, most eloquent in verse of all creation?

Despite the one who hates you upon its hills.
