هاتbring اسقنيهاgive it to me to drink مِنfrom عَتيقaged مدامِwine
حَيثnow that الزَمانtime صَفاgrew serene وَنلتُand I attained مَراميmy desire
Bring it—give me aged wine to drink,
Bring me a drink from the aged wine
Now that time has grown serene and I have attained my desire.
Where time was pure and I attained my hopes
وَاتركand let loose خيولsteeds صَبابَتيmy ardent longing أَلقىI confront بِهاwith them
بَينَamid الصُفوفthe ranks كَتائبَbattalions اللوّامthe reproachers
And let loose the steeds of my longing, that with them I may face
And leave my steeds of youth, I cast them
Amid the ranks the battalions of reproachers.
Amongst the ranks, battalions of blame
فَعَساكَso perhaps you تَنظُرyou see مِنfrom غلامكyour servant فيin الوَغىbattle
ماwhat لاnot رُؤيwas seen مِنfrom عنترٍAntar وَعصامand Isam
Then perhaps you will see from your servant in battle
May you look from your boy in the fray
What was never seen from Antar and Isam.
What was not seen from Antar and Asaam
وَتَرىand you see العَواذلthe reproachers عِندَat ذَلِكَthat أُلجِمواthey were bridled
مِنbecause of هَيبَتيawe of me فيin حضرَتيmy presence بلجامwith a bridle
And you will see the reproachers then bridled,
And you see the cowards then were silenced
Out of awe of me, in my presence, with a bridle.
By my awe in my presence, bridled
وَتَرىand you see اللَواحيthe censurers فيat المَواقفthe stations أَحجمواthey shrank back
بِالقَولin speech عَنfrom نَقضundoing وَعَنand from إبرامconfirming
And you will see the censurers at their stations shrink back
And you see the slanderers in the stations were deterred
From speaking to undo or to confirm.
From falsity and fromresolve, muted
وَتَخالand you suppose أَنthat طَوائفbands الرقباءthe watchers قَدalready
هابواthey dreaded مضاربstriking edges لهذَميmy keen spear وَحساميand my sword
And you will suppose that the bands of watchers have
And you’d think the gangs of necks were
Dreaded the striking edges of my keen spear and my sword.
Frightened of my club and sword
وَكَذاand likewise الوشاةthe talebearers مِنfrom الخمولinertness تظنُّهمyou think them
يَومon the day of اللقاthe encounter خُلقواthey were created بِغَيرwithout كَلامspeech
And likewise, so inert are the talebearers that you would think,
And likewise the gossipers, from languor you’d think
On the day of encounter, that they were created without speech.
They were created without speech
فَإِذاso when نقضتyou break عُهودهمtheir covenants وَأمرتنيand you command me
بِقتالهمto fight them جبنواthey lost courage عَنfrom الإقدامadvancing
So when you break their covenants and command me
So if they break their vows and you order me
To fight them, they will shrink from advancing.
To battle them, they shrink from daring
وَكماتُهمand their champions شامواthey sheathed السُيوفthe swords وَسالمواand they made peace
وَرمواand they cast بِأَنفسهمthemselves عَلىat أَقداميmy feet
And their champions will sheathe their swords and make peace,
And their vectis have tasted swords and made peace
And cast themselves at my feet.
And flung themselves upon my feet
لتزَوُّجِfor the marriage of الأَخوينthe two brothers عزٌّglory هاميpouring down
For the two brothers’ marriage, glory rains down.
For the marriage of the two brothers, pride encamps
