Alas! Woe to me for my reproachers' blame,
Woe is me, woe for the blame of my tormentor,
and the dullness of the foolish, base reproacher.
And the crudeness of the foolish ignoble faultfinder.
ياO لَوعَتيmy anguish ماwhat حيلتيmy recourse فيregarding ذاthis الرَشاyoung gazelle
أَشكوهshall I complain of him أَمor أَشكوshall I complain لَدَيهِto him تذلليmy abasement
O my anguish! What can I do about this young gazelle?
Oh my agony, I have no stratagem for this mischief,
Shall I complain of him, or complain to him of my abasement?
Shall I complain of him or plead to him in humiliation?
بِالأَمسyesterday كُنتI was أَلومI blame أَربابdevotees الهَوىlove
وَأَظنand I think أَنيthat I صاحبpossessor الرَأيjudgment الجليclear
Yesterday I was blaming the devotees of love,
Yesterday I blamed the lovers,
and thought that I possessed clear judgment,
Thinking I was the wise one.
حَتّىuntil رَناgazed هَذاthis الغَزالgazelle وَصادَنيand caught me
فَغَدَوتso I became أَعذِرُI excuse كُلَّevery صَبٍّpassionate lover مُبتَليafflicted
until this gazelle gazed at me and caught me;
Until this gazelle fled from me,
so I came to excuse every afflicted lover.
And I began to excuse every enamored sufferer.
ياO هاجِريyou who forsake me ماnot كُنتI was أَحسبI think أَنَّنيthat I

I am made to drink مِنfrom الهجرانestrangement كأسa cup الحنظلcolocynth
O you who forsake me, I did not think that I
Oh companion of my migration, I never thought
would be made to drink estrangement's cup of colocynth.
I would be made to drink bitterness from estrangement like wormwood.
ياO بغيتيmy desire ماnot ليfor me سِواكother than you فَكيفَماso how, then
أَلقىI suffer الإِهانةhumiliation فيin هَواكlove for you وَأَنتَwhile you ليmine
O my heart's desire, I have none but you; how, then,
Oh my longing, I have none but you so however
do I suffer humiliation in loving you, when you are mine?
I am disgraced in my love for you, you are still mine.

And when hardship from your rejection befalls me,
And when the firmness of your rejection afflicts me
and you favor barefoot folk,
And I accept barefoot people,

أَصبَحتI began أَدعوI invoke اللَهGod باسمكby your name ياO عليAli
and longing makes me ill and my anguish grows,
Passion makes me sick and increases my torment,
I begin to call upon God by your name, O Ali.
I start praying to God in your name, O Ali.
