سماsoared فيin سَماءthe sky السَعدgood fortune وَالأُنسand fellowship وَالسَناand radiance
سما في سَماء السَعد وَالأُنس وَالسَنا
سَميرboon companion السَخاgenerosity شَمسsun السَماحةmagnanimity وَالسَنىand glory
سَمير السَخا شَمس السَماحة وَالسَنى
He soared in the sky of good fortune, fellowship, and radiance,
Sky in the sky of bliss, intimacy and brilliance
The boon companion of generosity, the sun of magnanimity and glory.
Generous sun of tolerance and benevolence
عمادpillar المَعاليlofty virtues عينforemost أَعيانnotables عَصرهhis age
عماد المَعالي عين أَعيان عَصره
عَزيزdear عَلَيهُمto them عَنهُمfrom them دافعwarding off العَناhardship
عَزيز عَلَيهُم عَنهُم دافع العَنا
The pillar of lofty virtues, the foremost notable of his age,
Pillar of glories, outstanding figure of his time
Dear to them, warding hardship away from them.
Dear to them, defending them from harm
أَميرٌa prince أَياديهhis favors الكِرامnoble أَقلُّهاthe least of them
أَميرٌ أَياديه الكِرام أَقلُّها
إِغاثةُrelief مَلهوفٍa distressed person إِلَيهِto him قَدalready اِنثَنىturned
إِغاثةُ مَلهوفٍ إِلَيهِ قَد اِنثَنى
A prince—the least of his noble favors is
A prince whose least generosity
Relief for a distressed man who has turned to him.
Is to help a desperate soul bent over in agony
دماثتهhis gentleness دَلَّتpointed عَلَيهِto him وَإِنَّهُand indeed he is
دماثته دَلَّت عَلَيهِ وَإِنَّهُ
دَواءa remedy لِداءfor the disease of العُسرhardship بِاليُسرthrough ease وَالغِنىand wealth
دَواء لِداء العُسر بِاليُسر وَالغِنى
His gentleness marks him out, and indeed he is
His grace shows him as a cure
A remedy for the disease of hardship, through ease and wealth.
For the illness of hardship with ease and wealth
تَقولsays لَهُto him العَلياءexalted glory وَهوَwhile he is حَليفُهاher ally
تَقول لَهُ العَلياء وَهوَ حَليفُها
تَفاخرtake pride بِحمدin praise فيكَof you أَضحىhas become مدوّناrecorded
تَفاخر بِحمد فيكَ أَضحى مدوّنا
Exalted glory says to him, her sworn ally:
The exalted say to him, their ally:
“Take pride in praise of you now recorded.
"Boast in the praise documented in you"
حلفتI swore يَميناًan oath ياO حسينHusayn بِأَنَّنيthat I
حلفت يَميناً يا حسين بِأَنَّني
حَبستI reserved عَلَيكfor you المَدحpraise ياO غايةultimate goal المُنىwishes
حَبست عَلَيك المَدح يا غاية المُنى
I have sworn an oath, O Husayn, that I
I swear by God, O Hussein, I have
Have reserved praise for you, O ultimate goal of wishes.
Imprisoned praise for you, O ultimate wish
سَأَنشُرI shall publish مِنهُsome of it فيin الدَواوينthe anthologies لِلوَرىfor mankind
سَأَنشُر مِنهُ في الدَواوين لِلوَرى
سجلّاًa scroll فَلاso not أَطويهِI fold it up إِلّاexcept عَلىupon الثَناpraise
سجلّاً فَلا أَطويهِ إِلّا عَلى الثَنا
I shall publish some of it in the anthologies for mankind:
I will spread it in books for all to see
A scroll I shall fold up only upon praise.”
A record I will not fold except in couplets
يُحيّيsalutes بِهِwith it حَتماًsurely مُحيّاكyour countenance مُخلصٌa devoted man
يُحيّي بِهِ حَتماً مُحيّاك مُخلصٌ
يسرّكdelights you ماwhat أَخفاهhe concealed it فيكَabout you وَأَعلَناand he proclaimed
يسرّك ما أَخفاه فيكَ وَأَعلَنا
A devoted man will surely salute your countenance with it;
It will surely revive your greetings, o loyal one
What he has concealed and proclaimed about you delights you.
May what I concealed and declared about you delight you
نَديمa boon companion أَجادexcelled in القَولspeech فيكَabout you فَعمَّهُso it enveloped him
نَديم أَجاد القَول فيكَ فَعمَّهُ
نَداكyour bounty الَّذيwhich مِنamong جُندهits hosts العزglory وَالهَناand happiness
نَداك الَّذي مِن جُنده العز وَالهَنا
A boon companion spoke eloquently of you, and was thus enveloped
A companion excellent in praising you, it encompassed him
By your bounty, whose hosts include glory and happiness.
Your support which we gained honourably
أَجلyes أَنتَyou قَدindeed أَنشاكcreated you رَبكyour Lord للمَلاfor the people
أَجل أَنتَ قَد أَنشاك رَبك للمَلا
أَميراًa prince حَليماًforbearing فيin العَطاgiving متفنِّناversatile
أَميراً حَليماً في العَطا متفنِّنا
Yes, your Lord has created you for the people,
You are indeed who your Lord created for nobility
A forbearing prince, versatile in giving.
A clement prince, ingenious in generosity
فَكُنتso you have been عَلىover طُولthe span of الزَمانtime وَلَمand have not تَزَلceased to be
فَكُنت عَلى طُول الزَمان وَلَم تَزَل
فَريداًpeerless إِلَيهمtoward them ياO أَباfather of الجُودgenerosity مُحسِناdoing good
فَريداً إِلَيهم يا أَبا الجُود مُحسِنا
Thus you have been throughout time, and still remain,
So you have always been and still are
Peerless in kindness toward them, O father of generosity;
Uniquely gracious to them, O Sir Bounty
نَصيراًa defender لِمَنof whoever أَولَيتَهُyou granted him مِنكَfrom you ذمّةًa pledge of protection
نَصيراً لِمَن أَولَيتَهُ مِنكَ ذمّةً
نَصوحاًa sincere adviser لِمَنto whoever لِلحَقto truth بِالنصحthrough counsel أَذعَناsubmitted
نَصوحاً لِمَن لِلحَق بِالنصح أَذعَنا
A defender of anyone to whom you have granted your protection,
A helper for those under your protection
A sincere adviser to whoever submits to truth through counsel;
Devoted in advice for those who heed
دَليلاًa guide إِلىto خَيرthe best of المَسالكpaths سالِكاًtreading
دَليلاً إِلى خَير المَسالك سالِكاً
دَواماًalways سَبيلthe way of الرُشدright guidance بِالفَوزof success موقِناcertain
دَواماً سَبيل الرُشد بِالفَوز موقِنا
A guide to the best of paths, treading
Guiding to the best path, travelling it
Always the way of right guidance, certain of success.
Ever taking the path of righteousness, sure of success
يَدومendures لَكَfor you الإقبالgood fortune ماas long as قالَsays صالحٌSalih
يَدوم لَكَ الإقبال ما قالَ صالحٌ
يُهنِّيكcongratulates you طِبbe glad نَفساًat heart وَصِلand maintain حبلَthe cord or bond of مَنwhoever دَناdrew near
يُهنِّيك طِب نَفساً وَصِل حبلَ مَن دَنا
May good fortune endure for you as long as Salih says,
May fortune stay with you, as the righteous said
Congratulating you: “Be glad at heart, and keep ties with whoever draws near.”
Congratulating your auspicious soul, binding those brought near
