خَير عام للصادق المَشهورِ

خَير عام للصادق المَشهورِ

جاءَ يَسعى بخصبه المَشكورِ

جاءَ يَسعى بخصبه المَشكورِ

A year of bounty for the renowned al-Sadiq

A blessed year for the renowned sincere one

has come hastening with its praised abundance.

Came seeking with its abundant fertility

فَتَحلَّى مِنهُ لتونس جيدٌ

فَتَحلَّى مِنهُ لتونس جيدٌ

بعقود مِن درّه المَنثور

بعقود مِن درّه المَنثور

Thus Tunis's neck took its adornment from him

So it adorned itself for Tunis with goodness

with necklaces of his scattered pearls.

With necklaces of its spread out pearls

وَتَجلَّت عَن وَجهِها بِضِياء

وَتَجلَّت عَن وَجهِها بِضِياء

مِن محياه ظُلمةُ الديجور

مِن محياه ظُلمةُ الديجور

And from her face was dispelled, by a radiance

And its features shone from the light

from his countenance, the darkness of deepest night.

Of its smile, the darkness of misfortune faded

فَهيَ بَينَ البِقاع أَشرَفُ دار

فَهيَ بَينَ البِقاع أَشرَفُ دار

ذات رَوض مِن جُوده مَمطور

ذات رَوض مِن جُوده مَمطور

She is, among all lands, the noblest abode,

So it is, among lands, the most noble abode

with a garden showered by his generosity.

With a garden watered by its generosity

وَهوَ للعالمين أَسمى مَليك

وَهوَ للعالمين أَسمى مَليك

لا يُبارَى في عَدله المَنشور

لا يُبارَى في عَدله المَنشور

And he is, for all the world, the loftiest sovereign,

And it is for all people the highest king

unrivaled in the justice he spreads abroad.

Whose justice cannot be matched

وَهوَ للملك حافظ بِسَداد

وَهوَ للملك حافظ بِسَداد

عَنهُ في دَولة العُلا مَأثور

عَنهُ في دَولة العُلا مَأثور

And he guards the kingdom with sound judgment,

And it is for the king a loyal protector

for which he is famed in the realm of glory.

Renowned in the state for keeping faith

وَهوَ لِلدين ناصر بِحسام

وَهوَ لِلدين ناصر بِحسام

في يَد الفَتك بِالعِدا مَشهور

في يَد الفَتك بِالعِدا مَشهور

And he champions the faith with a keen sword,

And it is for the religion an aider with the sword

drawn in slaughter's hand against the foes.

Known for striking the enemies

وَهوَ نَعم المُجير في كُل خَطب

وَهوَ نَعم المُجير في كُل خَطب

لِنَزيل في قَومه مَوتور

لِنَزيل في قَومه مَوتور

And what an excellent protector he is in every calamity

And it is the best grantor of refuge in every ordeal

for a wronged sojourner among his people.

For one aggrieved among his people

فَلَئن فازَ قاصدٌ بِذمام

فَلَئن فازَ قاصدٌ بِذمام

في كِتاب بِأَمره مَمهور

في كِتاب بِأَمره مَمهور

For if indeed a seeker gains a pledge of protection

So if one came seeking fulfillment

in a letter sealed at his command,

In a letter sealed by his command

في كِتاب بصدق وَعد كَريم

في كِتاب بصدق وَعد كَريم

مِن كَريم عَلى الوَفا مَقصور

مِن كَريم عَلى الوَفا مَقصور

in a letter bearing a true and generous promise,

In a letter of truthful promise from a noble one

from a generous man devoted solely to keeping faith,

Known for keeping his word

نالَ ما رام في حِماه وَأَضحى

نالَ ما رام في حِماه وَأَضحى

موئلاً في الأَمان لِلمَغدور

موئلاً في الأَمان لِلمَغدور

he attains what he desired within his protection, and becomes

He attained what he desired under his protection

a safe refuge for the betrayed.

And became in safety a refuge for the oppressed

وَغَدا النسر عِنده في اِصطِياد

وَغَدا النسر عِنده في اِصطِياد

لِجَميع الطُيور كَالعصفور

لِجَميع الطُيور كَالعصفور

And the eagle, in his presence, has become, in its hunting

And the eagle became equal to him in hunting

of all the birds, like a sparrow.

To all birds like a sparrow

يا حَليف النَدى وَأَوفى مُجيب

يا حَليف النَدى وَأَوفى مُجيب

لِنِداء مِن آمر مَأمور

لِنِداء مِن آمر مَأمور

O ally of generosity and most faithful responder

O ally of dew and most faithful respondent

to a call from a commander himself under command:

To a call from one ordered to command

هاكَ عاماً أَتى يَهنيك فيهِ

هاكَ عاماً أَتى يَهنيك فيهِ

بِبَقاءٍ لِبَيتك المَعمور

بِبَقاءٍ لِبَيتك المَعمور

Here is a year that has come to offer you congratulations

On the prosperity of your populated home

on the continuance of your flourishing house,

And the permanence of it, as vouched for

وَدَوام رَواه بَعض ثِقات

وَدَوام رَواه بَعض ثِقات

في سَجلّ بخطهم مَسطور

في سَجلّ بخطهم مَسطور

and on lasting continuance, reported by some trustworthy men

By the reliable in their inscribed register

in a register inscribed in their handwriting,

And eternity till resurrection in a kingdom

وَخُلود إِلى النُشور بِملك

وَخُلود إِلى النُشور بِملك

فاقَ ملك الأقيال وَالجَمهور

فاقَ ملك الأقيال وَالجَمهور

and on immortality until the Resurrection, with a reign

Beyond the kingdoms of multitudes and ages

surpassing the rule of princes and the multitude.

Where you supported it firmly and determinedly

حَيث أَيدته بِحَزم وَعَزم

حَيث أَيدته بِحَزم وَعَزم

وَاحتِفال خال عَن المَحظور

وَاحتِفال خال عَن المَحظور

For you strengthened it with prudence and resolve

With a celebration devoid of prohibition

and diligent care free of what is forbidden.

And to establish it you appointed lions

وَلتمكينه اتخذت ليوثاً

وَلتمكينه اتخذت ليوثاً

يَدفَعون الأَذى عَن المَقهور

يَدفَعون الأَذى عَن المَقهور

And to secure it, you enlisted lions

To ward off harm from the oppressed

who ward off harm from the oppressed

And they repel with valor from it

وَيصدّون بِالبَسالة عَنهُ

وَيصدّون بِالبَسالة عَنهُ

كُلَّ مَن يَنتَمي إِلى تَيمور

كُلَّ مَن يَنتَمي إِلى تَيمور

and repel from him, with valor,

All who belong to Tamerlane

all who are affiliated with Timur.

And with excellent management every minister

وَبِحُسن التَدبير كُلُّ وَزير

وَبِحُسن التَدبير كُلُّ وَزير

قامَ فيهِ مَع عامل مَأجور

قامَ فيهِ مَع عامل مَأجور

And through sound administration, every minister

Stood in it, along with the appointed worker

served within it alongside a salaried official.

And people were brought to life in the shadow of security

وَأَنمت الأَنام في ظل أَمن

وَأَنمت الأَنام في ظل أَمن

لِمُقيم وَراحل مَنظور

لِمُقيم وَراحل مَنظور

And you lulled mankind to sleep beneath the shade of security,

For resident and newcomer alike

evident to resident and traveler alike.

And you instituted the penal laws in every decree

وَأَقمت الحُدود في كُل حُكمٍ

وَأَقمت الحُدود في كُل حُكمٍ

فيهِ إِنصاف صامَت مَصدور

فيهِ إِنصاف صامَت مَصدور

And you enforced the prescribed penalties in every judgment

Wherein silent justice flows

in which one silent and sore at heart receives justice.

And you guided those who went astray with advice

وَهَديت الَّذين ضَلّوا بِنَص

وَهَديت الَّذين ضَلّوا بِنَص

في الأَحاديث وَارد مَذكور

في الأَحاديث وَارد مَذكور

And you guided those who had strayed by a text

Found in the mentioned, transmitted traditions

recorded and mentioned in the hadiths.

And you spent money to reduce the burden

وَبَذلت النُقود في خَفض غرّ

وَبَذلت النُقود في خَفض غرّ

مُتَعال بِجَيشه المَجرور

مُتَعال بِجَيشه المَجرور

And you spent money to bring low a deluded fool,

Of the imposed tax on its forced conscripted army

haughty with the army he led along.

And you supported the Imam through the act

وَنَصَرت الإِمام مِنكَ بفعل

وَنَصَرت الإِمام مِنكَ بفعل

لهمام موفق مَبرور

لهمام موفق مَبرور

And you supported the Imam with a deed of your own,

Of the auspicious, successful protector

of a noble hero, granted success and blessed.

And you called upon men, who are mountains

وَنَدبت الرِجال وَهِيَ جِبالٌ

وَنَدبت الرِجال وَهِيَ جِبالٌ

لقتال المعاند المَدحور

لقتال المعاند المَدحور

And you summoned men—and they are mountains—

To battle the defeated enemy

to fight the defiant, routed foe.

And you allied to repel the affliction

وَتَحالفتما عَلى دَفع علج

وَتَحالفتما عَلى دَفع علج

ما لَهُ ناصر مِن المَقدور

ما لَهُ ناصر مِن المَقدور

And the two of you allied to repel a barbarian

Of one who has no aider among the able

who has no defender against decreed fate.

And it is as if I see him turned into a neighbor

وَكَأني بِهِ وَقَد صارَ جاراً

وَكَأني بِهِ وَقَد صارَ جاراً

لأبيه في قَبره المَحفور

لأبيه في قَبره المَحفور

And I seem to see him already become a neighbor

Of his father in his dug out grave

to his father in his dug-out grave,

And his death announced among his family, children

وَنُعِي بَينَ أَهله وَبَنيه

وَنُعِي بَينَ أَهله وَبَنيه

وَذَويه في حُصنه المَحصور

وَذَويه في حُصنه المَحصور

and his death announced among his family and sons

And relatives in their besieged fortress

and his kin, within his besieged fortress.

And every leader who was with him in his broken party

وَبخزيٍ يَبوء كُل رَئيس

وَبخزيٍ يَبوء كُل رَئيس

كانَ مَعْهُ بحزبه المَكسور

كانَ مَعْهُ بحزبه المَكسور

And every leader comes away in disgrace

Retreats in disgrace

who was with him in his shattered faction,

And calls out to him while he drowns

وَيُنادي عَلَيهِ وَهوَ غَريق

وَيُنادي عَلَيهِ وَهوَ غَريق

في نجيع من بَطنه المَبتور

في نجيع من بَطنه المَبتور

and cries out against him as he lies drowned

In a pool of his ripped open belly

in gore from his severed belly:

May God not let the misstep of an aggressor persist

لا أَقال الإله عَثرة باغ

لا أَقال الإله عَثرة باغ

في قُيود مِن بَغيه مَأسور

في قُيود مِن بَغيه مَأسور

May God never pardon an aggressor's stumble,

Bound in shackles for his aggression

held captive in fetters of his own aggression.

Thus pass the nights of an arrogant fool

هَكَذا تَنقضي لَيالي سَفيه

هَكَذا تَنقضي لَيالي سَفيه

بِصَفاء مِن دَهره مَغرور

بِصَفاء مِن دَهره مَغرور

Thus pass the nights of a fool

Deceived by his deluded fortune

deluded by the tranquility of his times.

So congratulations every new year

فَتهنأ في كُل عام جَديد

فَتهنأ في كُل عام جَديد

بامتياز مِن العلا مَيسور

بامتياز مِن العلا مَيسور

So may you rejoice in every new year

With privilege readily obtained from the sublime

with readily attained distinction from the heights of glory,

And remain in the kingdom a refuge for the subjects

وابق في الملك لِلرَعايا مَلاذاً

وابق في الملك لِلرَعايا مَلاذاً

بِفُؤاد ذي رَأفة مَسرور

بِفُؤاد ذي رَأفة مَسرور

and remain in kingship a refuge for your subjects,

With a heart of gentle joy

with a joyful heart endowed with compassion,

When the glorious one chronicled for your glory

ما المَعالي قالَت لِمجدك أَرّخ

ما المَعالي قالَت لِمجدك أَرّخ

عام بشرى للصادق المَنصور

عام بشرى للصادق المَنصور

as long as lofty glories say to your renown: Record the date—

A year of good tidings for the victorious sincere one

A year of glad tidings for al-Sadiq the victorious.
