شَهر الصِيام كَثير الخَير قَد رَحَلا

شَهر الصِيام كَثير الخَير قَد رَحَلا

وَنجمه في سَما الأَعمال قَد أَفلا

وَنجمه في سَما الأَعمال قَد أَفلا

The month of fasting, abundant in goodness, has departed,

The blessed month of fasting has departed

and its star has set in the sky of deeds.

And its star in the sky of deeds has set

فَأظلمت مُذ مَضى عَنا مساجدُنا

فَأظلمت مُذ مَضى عَنا مساجدُنا

وَكُلُّها مِن مَصابيح القِيام خَلا

وَكُلُّها مِن مَصابيح القِيام خَلا

So our mosques have grown dark since it left us,

So our mosques have been dark since it left

and all are empty of the lamps of night prayer.

يا نَفس هَل فيهِ قَد قدمت مِن عمل

يا نَفس هَل فيهِ قَد قدمت مِن عمل

يَكون فيهِ النجا وَالفوز إن قُبلا

يَكون فيهِ النجا وَالفوز إن قُبلا

O soul, have you offered any deed during it

O my soul, did you perform in it any deed

in which salvation and triumph would lie, if accepted?

That may bring salvation and triumph if accepted

بَل قَد عكفت عَلى الأَوزار فيهِ فَلا

بَل قَد عكفت عَلى الأَوزار فيهِ فَلا

أَحجمت عَنها إِلى حين اِنقِضاهُ وَلا

أَحجمت عَنها إِلى حين اِنقِضاهُ وَلا

Rather, you devoted yourself to sins during it, so you did not

Rather, you busied yourself with burdens during it

refrain from them up to the time it ended, nor—

Neither avoiding them for a time nor completing them

لَكنهُ ما اِشتَكى لِلّه مِنكَ وَما

لَكنهُ ما اِشتَكى لِلّه مِنكَ وَما

أَظنه بَلَّغَ الذَنبَ الَّذي حَصَلا

yet it did not complain of you to God, nor
