    Through you, the horizon of justice in Egypt has shone.

    O minister of the realm, O you whose beacon stands high!

    يَزدَري في كُل واد بِالبِحار

    O counselor, the bounty of whose two hands has come

    To scorn the seas in every valley;

    يَزدَهي كَالدُر في سلك النضار

    And a champion of the broken, whose praise

    Glitters like pearls on a strand of pure gold;

    كُل ما فيهِ صَلاحٌ للدّيار

    And an emir whose judgment guides toward

    All that brings well-being to the land;

    And a protector of a poor man in hardship,

    Who gained prosperity without asking.

    My confinement has dragged on, O Abu al-Siddiq, during

    The time of Eid al-Fitr, in the narrowest dwelling.

    And my little ones’ circumstances have been changed

    By poverty that encircled them with ruin.

    So dispel the anguish that has descended, and be generous

    With that which will mend their brokenness.

    And fulfill the promise, and relieve distress,

    O father of eminence, before ruin comes.

    And be kind to a humble servant, grateful

    For favors never confined by limits.

    And he has had enough, over seven months,

    Of the painful waiting that has worn him down.

    May the Lord increase you in favor, as long as there appears

    Radiant light from the sun of day.
