كَيفَhow التَشبثclinging بَعدَafter اليَأسdespair بِالأَملِto hope
كَيفَ التَشبث بَعدَ اليَأس بِالأَملِ
وَعروةand the loop الصَبرpatience حلتهاundid it يَدُthe hand المللِweariness
وَعروة الصَبر حلتها يَدُ المللِ
How can one cling to hope after despair,
How to cling to hope after despair's grasp
when the hand of weariness has undone patience’s loop?
When the rope of patience is loosed by ennui's hand
وَاستعضلand became intractable الداءthe illness مذsince عزbecame scarce الدَواءthe remedy وَلَمand did not
وَاستعضل الداء مذ عز الدَواء وَلَم
يَنجَعprove effective عِلاجُthe treatment of زَعيمthe master of الطبmedicine فيagainst العللِthe ailments
يَنجَع عِلاجُ زَعيم الطب في العللِ
And the illness grew intractable since the remedy became scarce, and no
Illness grew severe when cure was scarce to find
treatment by the foremost physician proved effective against the ailments.
And the eminent physician's treatment was of no avail
