A beloved who soon tires, stingy with union,

Generous in shunning me—there is no way to reach him.

Precious, as though the sun were beneath his veil,

By day and night, never departing from him.

    كذلكَ ليلُ العاشقينَ طويلُ

    The night grows long for me through the estrangement of the one who shuns me;

So too the night of lovers is long.

O reproacher, cease reproaching me and leave me be,

For I do not incline to the words of reproachers.

And let me die in love and affection for him,

For the words of those who blame weigh heavily on me.

    وكيفَ التسلى والفؤادُ عليلُ

    Whenever I seek to forget him, my yearning grows;

And how can there be solace while the heart is ailing?

One versed in affection therefore excuses me,

While one ignorant of passion reproaches me.

    فلا شكَّ داءُ العاشقين دَخِيلُ

    So, O my slayer, be gentle, and cast a glance at a lover;

For surely the illness of lovers is deep-seated.

And when he shunned me and grew overbearing in his estrangement,

I turned back to [an incomplete word], a close friend in this age.

For I have none but the pious sheikh Ibn Rashid

Among all creation—and mankind can vouch for that.

And I sought refuge with Mas‘ud, brother of generosity and bounty,

Who gives to all creatures while the years are barren.

Brave, mighty, valiant, scaling the heights,

He confronts a thousand, scarcely wavering.

Generous and fierce in battle, no young man is like him,

Nor among the most generous is there any equal to him.

His gifts to those granted well-being are rain, and his palm

Is a cloud pouring upon the people of this age.

Who, then, is like Mas‘ud, descendant of Rashid,

Whose bounty is lavish and abundant among mankind?

Abundant crafted verse in praise of my lord—

The refuge of humankind—is little, O my two friends.
