You are the refuge of commanders and princes,

O best of patrons, a champion of the Imam.

You are the one to whom the writ came bearing glad tidings,

with congratulations for you, in the wake of a herald.

And everyone has read in the pages of happiness:

Your Egypt rejoiced for you in a happy destiny.

lofty of summit, hard to ascend, and of great consequence.

It is a throne that, to secure it, requires

sound judgment, renowned in grave affairs.

And surely you safeguard it with abundant resolve

and sternness that brings every destroyer to ruin.

And you, O Ma'mun, repel from it whoever transgresses,

with Mu'tasim's sword and a wary man's resolve.

And you nourish your Egypt with fertility from bounty

flowing abundantly like a sea from your hands.

And with care you remove from its regions

whatever remains of Munkar and Nakir.

And you destroy its hater with a crushing warrior's onslaught,

unyielding in temper, worthy of allegiance.

And you uphold the mighty kingdom with wisdom

and the radiance of a face bright with success.

And you put the world in order by raising foundations

before which, in Egypt, the gaze does not grow weary.

So rise to take the reins with a resolve

by which you erase the traces of every hardship.

For through your justice, spread abroad, strife is folded away,

kindled by oppression in an agitator's heart.

For long have the homelands awaited from you

their rescue from the heat of a blazing fire.

And in their sincerity they implored God

for the fulfillment of hopes for the finest counselor,

until their prayer was answered, and through you shone

a kingdom whose most august throne you ascended.

And Time made peace with them in the joy of your nearness,

with a glance from him pointing toward serenity.

And their days grew serene, so they sang

your praises, surpassing the praise of Jarir.

And to you, from the seat of the Caliphate, has journeyed

its firman, soaring with sweet perfume.

And it came bearing glad tidings of that for which we

had hoped for permanence from the bounty of a mighty one.

So rule us as you please, and pronounce

a judgment through which we gain a camel-load more.

And rain pours from your right hand, watering

with its dew a garden that was not verdant.

Where leadership lies in the right hand of a refined man,

gentle of temper, discerning in affairs.

That is you, O Tawfiq, whose state is most august,

whose beauty you have built up with a supporter.

And you abrogated the verses of oppression and suffering

with a book of kindness unmatched by any peer.

And you planted affection in the soil of hearts,

its branches growing through mending the broken.

By God, you, O Khedive of Egypt,

are most worthy of lasting, mighty sovereignty.

So take pride in returning what was unjustly taken among us to

its owners, and answer a poor man's plea.

For how often have you embraced with Ali-like compassion

among us the bodies of our old and young.

And how often, with Umar-like might, have you driven away

from us the perils of a schemer and a fierce man.

And how often have you lifted oppression from a sufferer

with shades of safety, a warning to the wrongdoer.

So may God always expand that breast of yours

by ending the widespread oppression in the land,

so that the homelands may regain their splendor, which

they hope for from you, and you are the best protector,

and may the sovereignty you hold in them endure

as long as Radwa stands firm like Thabir.

O liberator of souls, that is a precious offering,

    from a slave in bondage, captive to the sovereign;

from a stringer of praise's necklaces, whose pearls

every connoisseur has wearied of describing.

He hopes for no dowry but its acceptance

from him; and that, from you, is no small thing.

May you ever walk proudly in the robes of office,

as long as praise is sweet in a vizier's presence,

or as long as a prose writer boasts among mankind

of praising you in each evening companion's gathering,

or as long as Egypt's firman is read out in an assembly

for you by one sincerely devoted in his heart,

or Majdi, rejoicing, pronounces this chronogram:

Tawfiq's decree raised a prince on high.
