You died—did you die on the path to greatness,

Trusting in truth, in the caravan of men?

Was it a sacrifice for the green branch in

    Lebanon's air, and those shades?

Or a sacrifice for the blossoms, sweet in fragrance,

And a sacrifice for the color on the lower slopes of the hills?

Did you then hasten toward the spring, toward

Its sweet outpouring in the ears of the nights?

You died—did you die as a sacrifice for art and thought,

And taste, and the aims of beauty?

Was it in defense of honor's pools, of

A hope nurtured by one of ardent imagination?

O generous-hearted one, you were not called

To the red sacrifices by a voice from my mountains.

No, nor did the branch call to you, nor

Did the spring clamor, nor did the heights protest.

You died like a flower plucked by the hand of an idler,

Who cares nothing for its fragrance.
