  3. تسأل الأطياب من سوّاك

    من أنفاس حور

    The fragrances ask: who fashioned you

    from the breaths of houris?

  4. أتراه الأمل المالئ

    أشواق العصور

    Could it be hope, which fills

    the longings of the ages?

  5. أنت ما أنت سوى

    الرحمة في الضوء الوثير

    You—you are nothing but

    mercy in the soft light.

  6. غضٌ يا فجر فلا تطلع

    ويا أنجم غوري

    Tender, O dawn—so do not rise,

    and, O stars, sink away.

  7. أنت ما أنت سوى

    النشوة في وعد الخمور

    You—you are nothing but

    rapture in the promise of wines.

  8. حدثّي يضع لك

    المرمرُ محرور الشعور

    Speak; before you will bow

    the marble, fevered with feeling.

  9. حدثي ما شئت عما

    شئت من شتى الأمور

    Speak as much as you wish about

    whatever you wish, among all kinds of matters.

  10. حدثي عن أي

    لا شيء يصر شجو الدهور

    Speak of any

    little nothing that enfolds the sorrow of the ages.

  11. إنما الألفاظ في

    ثغرك من روح الحرير

    The words in

    your mouth are but of the spirit of silk.

  12. حدثي ينفتح العقل

    ويستهد بنور

    Speak, and the mind will open

    and seek guidance by light.

  13. كل قول لك

    أسطورة ورد وعبير

    Every utterance of yours

    is a legend of roses and fragrance.

  14. فاخلعي حلماً على

    حلم وزيدي واستثيري

    So bestow a dream upon

    a dream; add more, and arouse.
