O you who forsake me, where is the time of old,

and a sweet tryst, and a tender pledge?

Days when we watered the nights with hopes,

    and light was in the farthest reaches of deep space;

our trysts would toy with the dawn,

for dawn was drowned in what we wished for.

Days when there poured down, at a wish

of ours, a sky of gushing light,

or it hid itself, out of reverence for our nuptials,

behind a veil of thin cloud?

Has that love died—has it died, that which

enchained my soul, a dawn of unfettered poetry?

And our flame was extinguished, and they drank their fill—

    of us, the nights and the wide-spreading morning;

and life came as winter upon

our skies, and snow lay across the road.

O you who forsake me, I am still youth's twin,

I strut in its sleeves, adorned with agate.

My night is a cup, and I am the one who drinks

love as nectar, before nectar came to be.

So return to your languishing lover, and drink as

you used to from my cup, and feast your eyes on the gleam.

Return; the rose will rejoice in us once

more, and its awakening fragrance will grow dewy.
