    O emigrant far abroad, pause.

We are truer to our pledge and nearer in kinship.

Whenever the beloved journeys farther abroad,

Longing deepens in our souls and wears them away.

You see us only as we are, in ardent love:

We have not forgotten, nor has longing departed.

O emigrant far abroad, you have not left

Our hearts; may you never cease looking upon them.

You are in all the beauty that spreads

Through our Lebanon, and all that shines forth:

In the throng of lights that wreathe Sannine,

    And in the splendor of the hanging darkness;

In the murmur of pools, in the clamor of shores,

In a melody dearer and sweeter.

Shall we then forget you? How, when the spring does not forget,

Nor has the river let go of its love for you?

How, when the grove claps only

When you are named, and makes no shadow dance otherwise?

How, when the flowers neither speak nor accord,

Except as words recited in your name?

It is as though the fragrance in the recesses

Were glances back to your former days.

Who is the rumor-monger who corrupted affection,

And revived doubts in you, and dictated to you?

The suspect one who rouses hatred and rancor

Has been nothing but the disgrace of the abject.

May your hands pardon whoever disowned the magnanimous,

The generous one who makes the earth fertile with largesse.

Who denied your courageous striving, and who rejected

Your contribution to greatness, and deemed it slight?

Who overlooked the merit of one who grapples with dark trials,

And rises proudly above time through excellence?

Will you then repay your lovesick one with rebuff and aversion,

For the abasement another inflicts on you?

    عاذلي فيك من ارابك عذلا

    We are twins in love, and twins in anguish;

My reproacher over you is the one who troubled you with blame.

    وخذ الروح واحتكم وتولا

    So leave blame and estrangement, and return to me;

And take my soul, set your terms, and take charge.

Return: you are the one we desire—you; may it perish,

The right hand that seeks severance and separation.

Return, most welcome; it will not be too cramped for its people—

My country—nor will it begrudge a dwelling place.

And she whom the needy petition, and who then shelters them

Through her sons, is worthier of your generous gifts.

And the homeland will be none but the magnanimous homeland,

And among us is one who lets reason rule within it.

    فأغنى من تعرفون وولى

    Time jested; may we not go mad along with time;

So it enriched those you know, and put them in power.

They left the fertile pasture a wasteland,

And the green homesteads barren ground and sand.

They violated the right of the weak and barred

The paths before those striving to earn a living.

They shackled the people—woe to them!—and made them taste

Kinds of humiliation—bitter aloes and vinegar.

And appointed effeminate men in their stead, until

The people nearly came to hate the independent homeland.

Say to the stubborn, arrogant man who has the sword:

Be complacent: justice is sharper and loftier.
