Send your peace among humankind, Muhammad.

Their sins have grown grievous, and a guide is scarce.

They have reverted, as though you had never been the light of guidance

For all the worlds, nor had your appointed hour arrived.

The spirit of the Age of Ignorance has become their spirit,

Strutting and running riot in every land.

The Age of Ignorance is but part of their age's ignorance,

And unbelief but part of its entrenched character.

They denied the Nazarene's majesty, though he

Is among God's blessings that cannot be denied.

They plunged so deep into error that they spread doubts

About what you promised and what you intend.

They erected beacons from blind reason,

And made it a lord from whom reward is sought and who is worshipped.

Thus they are, to themselves, temples of apostasy—

Frenzied, sending forth to misery and leading into it.

So al-Lat is what they reckon, and al-Uzza what they seek.

God is greatest! Where is your axe to reap?

God! What a night, its feeling beyond compare,

Time stood still within it, and the northern star returned (uncertain reading).

The sky drew near, as though the secret of its being

Lay on earth, and it yearned to behold it and keep watch.

Lights called to one another, undreamed of

By the clearest dreamer; no kohl-blackness could be glimpsed.

Things wondered what had come over them,

Awoke, and their frozen perception blossomed.

Joy spread; nothing remained but living souls

Hoping, drowning in splendor, giving praise.

Nature's laws were overcome and became

Obedient to him who summoned them, rising and sitting.

What wonder is there, when this is his night,

This its travail, and this the birth?

The infant—a palm in the dust, subjecting it

To abasement, and an eye ascending into the sky.

The universe hails the newborn and exults,

Grows sweet at its roots through him, and glorifies him.

O messenger, you are nothing but love,

An expression of love that never runs out.

This Book, and every utterance of his

Within it, and that matchless eloquence—

Who would have memorized it and recited a verse,

But for you, or chanted it with beautiful recitation?

If I go too far in taking pride in you, be gentle:

You are not my religious guide, nor am I an atheist.

You grasped the essence of oneness; it grew sublime

And pure, and its blazing mystery shone.

You spread it among people, a Creator's gift,

Guiding them, strengthening them, making them immortal.

In its name, the tribes of a nation gathered,

Binding their little fingers in pledge to you, as they still do.

It existed—but did it? You came, and now

The ear of time resounds and thunders with it.

Had it heeded your call in full,

Time's remotest past and all eternity would have become Arab.

You united, till all the people of creation

Were brothers in God, and one hand through piety.

You united: humanity is one in essence.

And I, though a follower of Jesus, bear witness.

You laid down law; no law has come since

Without you as its wellspring and watering place.

    You established their state, vast as the horizon;

On earth, what narrows grows wide and stretches far.

    أمن الضعيف بها ولان السيد

    It is a state whose order is heaven's weave;

The weak were safe within it, and the master grew gentle.

People are equal before it: no haughty

Tyrant, no domineering masters and slaves.

Love adjudicates the relations between them,

    Not a keen sword, bright-bladed and Indian-forged.

Indeed we remember, while calamity encamps

    Around al-Aqsa, rampaging and threatening,

And hatred's poisons assail the soil,

So the root of fertility dries and freezes within it.

The earth, plunderers' prey, wishes that

Nothingness would visit it, and tomorrow forget it.

    Death's hands buffet souls,

And men's hopes are humbled and extinguished.

My anguish! But what is my anguish? There are their multitudes—

Dead among the living, not yet laid in graves.

Scattered upon sword-edges; and those who survived

Were torn by misery's fangs and driven into exile.

They cry to the universe for help, but it is all injustice,

A bloodstained hand and a shuttered mind.

There, in affliction and sorrow, it is all the same:

Neither Christ's name nor Ahmad's brings rescue.

O sender of birds in flocks, win justice

For goodness; your noblest purpose is almost lost.

Where are those stones? Indeed, their torrents,

Pouring down, blind and cripple those they strike.

Send them: whoever the light on high has not guided,

A boulder raining down upon him will cure him.

Send your peace among humankind, Muhammad.

Their sins have grown grievous, and a guide is scarce.
