I have grown weary, O Lord, and nothing on

Earth dispels the weariness that assails me.

I have tired of its pleasures: whenever

I drew near, they fled, mocking me.

I wished I could grasp this radiance,

    And its splendid, radiant hue,

And the fleeing melody as it emerges,

And the breeze, intent on setting forth,

And dawn's splendor, and what is scattered

By evenings across its horizons in passing.

And a shadow passed—and behold, Adam,

Saying, 'Oh, what a dream! This is it!'
