You told me yesterday that I am a pulse of light,

growing dewy at the parting of the horizons,

and the awakening of the stars at eventide,

and the succor of dreams and longings.

You said that when I look around, they begin

    to appear—the depths—in my pupils.

And when the breeze plays with my hair,

    fragrance wafts over the ancient hills;

and melodies surge if I raise my voice

    far, irresistible in their release.

What is the glow? What are the lights?

And how is a fire kindled?

And how is that darkness wiped away

    by this daylight?

    And color—is it anything but

    what the eyes suppose?

I wonder: does the rose have a soul,

    aflame and richly fragrant,

with a dwelling and a covenant,

    and migration and neighbors?

Roses are the bounty of the wilds,

    and their chosen creation.

And I have never seen soil

whose yield is musk and laurel.

So how do they pour forth fragrance

    from their breasts—the stones?

A twig sinks deep and perishes

    in the earth, then is raised up;

so how does it draw from it

    life, though it is barren?

And what is life? Is it bloom,

    and tenderness and a smile,

or a pulse and a shudder,

and a leap and a spreading forth?

Is there life in the branches,

and in the soil, something like flight?

    My mind goes astray whenever

I question it, and grows bewildered.

And I ask the shooting stars about what

    lies in them both, and how they are set in motion;

and the wind, where it blows from,

    and where it finds rest.

    تلفُنا الأسرار

    We live amid enigmas;

    secrets enfold us.

Where, then, is your resolve to bring down

    the veils before us?
