A hope goes out, dew-fresh, within my soul.

And it is my soul—so what has befallen you, my soul?

As for me, if I am gone, beloved, down will fall

My sunrise tomorrow, and my ambition will perish.

And I turn away, bereaved by the pain of longing,

Orphaned by the rapture of torment.

Without you, I am an eye that sees no light,

And a mind that finds no way to clarity.

Without you, I am a thing in misery's grip,

Which scatters it along the pathways of the wind.

My world is a jest of the void, and my dreams

    Are monstrosities, lavish with castoffs.

Existence is desolate after you, and dead

Are its people, striding above a tomb.

Every melody is a sob when you are gone,

And annihilation's voice is the echo of a hiss.

And the fragrant herbs are naked, without perfume,

And morning's hue is that of a slaughtered victim.

The stars asked me about you, and when

I confided, they scattered their sorrows in my wounds.

So I bear my love and the burden

Of beauty, color, and spilled fragrance.

Do not go—by the sanctity of your face, by the dawn,

By your eyes, by love—do not go.

    And rise—joy will rise—and return,

So fragrance may frolic, setting out at dawn on the slopes.

And come; let us gladden the nights with our two loves,

And sink deep into my heart, and rest.

So for whom, if you depart, shall I build my chambers

And raise them high—and whom will my palaces host?
