Fate has descended—who can turn it back and ward it off,
Destiny has descended, so who can repel it,
and shelter us from death's wiles and protect us?
And protect from the schemes of death and prevent it?

If banishing death were within one's power,
If it were possible to ward off misfortune,
you alone would have banished what we dread and fear.
You alone would have warded off what we dread and fear.

Death is humankind's fetter; none is immortal—
Death is the fate of mankind, not everlasting,
neither one who disregards it nor one who fears it.
Neither for one resigned nor one distressed.

But the downfall of eagles, when they plummet,
But the fall of eagles when they plunge down,
is graver, strikes deeper into souls, and is more dreadful.
Is most painful and impactful to souls and alarming.

And wild tempests inspire greater dread,
And raging storms, violent and fearful,
and greater grief, either when they crush the steadfast mountains
Either demolish firmly rooted structures or tear them out.

Or a day when suns are swept away and disappear,
and seize the stars by the forelock and uproot them.
And the stars are dragged by their forelocks and uprooted.

O yesterday's dawn, when did you rise? Yet it was only
O morning whose dawn yesterday rose, but
tears that hid you from me in the darkness.
I hid you in the darkness from my tearful eyes.

I recognized who extinguished your tomorrow, would that the one
perished would rise, and your veiled face with him!
Who extinguished were gone, and your veiled face.

the wisest, most congenial, and brightest of those we love.
More knowing and familiar than our beloved and trusted.

O elder who never outgrew the season of youth,
O sheikh, though not beyond youth’s realm,
those in the bloom of youth weep for you.
The smooth-cheeked youth weep for you.

What did it avail you that your standing was renowned,
What use was your high station, as a refuge
your sanctuary sought, and your neighbor secure,
And protected, with neighbors defending you?

Hoping in you, polite, dust-sprinkled, pretentious.

They dab their eyes while mine weep copiously for you.

Nobly you reached the highest generosity in youth,
and they wipe away their tears; mine is anguished grief for you.

In honor, you reached the peaks of virtue while still young,
Lineage atop the mountaintops, its pillows,
and united, however you wished, what cannot be united:
And earnings from every collected virtue.

Sleep: one of praiseworthy character, though laid to rest,
endures as noble deeds endure, and rises.
