Are you a delight to my eye, or a delight to the heart?
Are you a delight to my eyes or a delight to my heart
Or are you a draught for love, whose pebbles are fertile?
Or are you a meadow for ardent love and deep longing

Or the face of a dream that shone, impossible to attain?
Or are you a face of dreams, aloof, unattainable
I have not asked you for mercy—so ask my sleeplessness.
I did not ask you for mercy, so grant me rest

My soul and the lightning-flash of generous hope are your ransom.
My soul is sacrificed for you, as well as the steed of hope
For you are indeed my love's glory in the mantle of my pride,
For you are the glory of my love in the chill of my pride

And my aspirations and wishes are those valleys
And the bliss of a song echoing in the cradle.
And the bliss of a song echoing in the resting place

O my sweet one and my love, O longings of one athirst!
O my sweetness and passion, O throbs of ecstasy
And I say: O face of divinity in my land,
And I say, O face of divinity in my country

Indeed, I have wished—and oh, what a mad lover!—
I wish, o lover of ardent love
That you were dead, and your grave were in my heart.
If only you were dead and your grave was in my heart
