We have sought our blood vengeance and slain

Every renegade and defiant one among you.

We have slain you for Yahya, and never

Could God's decree be turned back.

You roused, O sons of slaves, lions

Who would not sit back from avenging their blood.

So suffer its heat, and the heat of swords

That blaze against you like burning fuel.

You kept seeking to make it crooked, until

You came to death in the worst of ways.

A noble man came to you, leading toward you

Young men from among them, like lions.

A noble man who raced toward glory until

He attained, by taking the lead, the utmost acclaim.

And upright fathers nurtured him to generosity,

And forefathers whom no forefathers could match.

A noble champion, refined, from Nizar,

And a chieftain with no equal among chieftains.

He seeks vengeance—the vengeance of a noble people,

Who held to covenant after covenant.

So he ravaged al-Hamra, leaving none of them

Except a captive, shackled in his bonds.

We have slain thousands of you, yet

Slaying slaves cannot equal the slaying of the noble man.

They killed him when he came to them as a guest.

His killing was no act of sound judgment.

    Evil, ignoble slaves killed him,

And the deeds of slaves are not praiseworthy.

They found no right guidance in what they did,

    No—nor was their fortune happy.

You betrayed him, sons of baseness, after

An oath that had been confirmed by covenants.

Yet even if his slaying was treachery, never

Was he a weakling—no, nor a trembling coward.

He was a lion who defended in war, and a fortress,

And a refuge and safeguard for the captive in chains.

In him were piety, forbearance, and valor,

And generosity that no generosity could match.

Your glory surpassed the glory of the illustrious, O Yahya,

Long ago; and you outstripped every illustrious man.

So may God reward you with the Garden of Eden,

Where every martyr is granted his reward.
