The sons of al-Hamra say, 'If our wing

    Were to fly, it would serve you a torrential shower for supper;

And you would be unable to bear it, and your souls would seethe,

And the strongholds' defenses would not protect you.'

For the wing, when it flew toward us, was driven off

Like privy-flies, or worms in dung heaps.

And showers of death raged over you,

With thunder and lightning, streaming and pouring down.

The swords of India would surely keep reaping your host,

As one reaps crops ripened for the sickles.

And when they saw us surging toward them,

They fled swiftly, fearing the blows of sword-blades.

So we advanced toward them, while spears struck at them,

Like the thrusts of horns beneath a haze of battle-dust.

So none of them remained but a fettered captive,

Being led as a prisoner, bound fast in chains,

And another of them, a fugitive—narrow had grown

The earth around him; he reeled with anguish and turmoil.

You met a massed, shelter-seeking host of ours,

Skilled at striking heads beneath the downpours.

In it are young raiders from the sons of Adnan,

And from the clan of Qahtan, men like falcons.

A lion leads them—a mighty, powerfully built lion,

A kindler of wars, noble and far from obscure.

His lineage is of the best of Qays; he was raised

Of old to glory and eminence by every noble man.

A trustworthy man, pure in lineage and refined,

He has pure ancestral honor and noble forebears.

His is a Qaysite, Arab fierceness,

With which he shielded the faith of guidance from every ignorant man.

Indeed, Sawwar drew a sword of Indian steel against you,

With which he severs heads as one severs joints.

Through him God slew those who banded together

Against us, and were people of lies and falsehood.

He advanced against the sons of al-Hamra when their doom had come,

With a host like a mountain, vast and proudly striding.

The spacious earth is too narrow for it—a massive host,

Huge, galloping hard, with many neighing steeds.

You set the millstone of war turning, and it turned against you,

With swift death, by which God has annihilated you.
