خَليلَيَّmy two friends صَبراًbe patient راحَةُsolace الحرّthe free man فيin الصَّبرِpatience
وَلاand no شَيءthing مِثلlike الصَّبرِpatience فيin الكَربِdistress لِلحُرِّfor the free man
My two friends, be patient: a free man's solace lies in patience.
My dear ones, patience brings comfort in hardship
And nothing matches patience for a free man in distress.
Nothing is like patience in distress for the free
فَلاso do not تَيأَساyou two despair مِنof فَرحَةٍjoy بَعدَafter ترحةsorrow
وَأَنand that تَبأياyou two exult بِاليُسرِin ease مِنfrom بَعدafter ماan emphatic particle عُسرِhardship
So do not despair of joy after sorrow,
So do not despair of joy after sadness
Nor of exulting in ease after hardship.
And that you find ease after hardship
فَكَمfor how many مِنof أَسيرٍa captive كانَwas فيin القِدِّleather bonds موثِقاًbound
فَأَطلَقَهُthen released him الرَّحمَنُthe All-Merciful مِنfrom حَلَقِthe rings الأَسرِcaptivity
For many a captive lay bound in leather thongs,
For many a prisoner was bound in chains
Then the All-Merciful freed him from the rings of captivity.
Yet released by the Merciful from the shackles
لَئِنif indeed كُنتُI was مَأخوذاًseized أَسيراًa captive وَكُنتُماand you two were
فَلَيسَthen it was not عَلىin حَربٍbattle وَلَكِنbut rather عَلىthrough غَدرِtreachery
Though I was taken captive, as were you two,
If I'm captured prisoner while you are
It was not in battle, but through treachery.
It is not war but treason that binds us
وَلَوand had كُنتُI feared أَخشىsome بَعضَwhat ماalready قَدbefallen me أَصابَنيbefallen me
حَمَتنيprotected me أَطرافُthe points الرُّدَينِيةِthe Rudayni spears السُّمرِthe brown ones
And had I feared some of what has befallen me,
If I feared what has befallen me
The points of the brown Rudayni spears would have shielded me.
I would be protected by the wings of the honorable knights
فَقَدfor indeed علمَknow الفتيانُthe young men أَنّيthat I كَمِيُّهاits armored warrior
وَفارِسُهاand its horseman المِقدامُthe daring one فيin ساعَةِthe hour الذُّعرِterror
For the young men know that I am war's armored champion,
For the youth know I am their defender
And its daring horseman in the hour of terror.
And their valiant horseman in the hour of panic
فَياso, O ظاعِناًdeparting traveler أَبلغconvey سلاميmy greeting of peace تحيّةًas a salutation
إلىto والديَّmy parents الهائِمينboth distraught لدىat ذِكريthe mention of me
So, departing traveler, convey my greeting of peace
So messenger inform my anxious parents
To my parents, distraught at the mention of me.
I send regards and greetings in my memory
وأدِّand convey إلىto عِرسيmy wife السَّلامgreetings of peace وقلand say لَهاto her
عَلَيكِupon you تَحِيّاتيmy salutations إِلىuntil مَوقِفِthe place of standing الحَشرِthe Resurrection gathering
And convey greetings of peace to my wife, and tell her:
And convey to my bride peace
My salutations be upon you until the gathering for Judgment.
And say to her my greetings until the day we meet before the Divine
بِهَمّكِwith concern for you ألقىI shall meet خالِقيmy Creator يَومَthe day مَوقِفيmy standing
وَكَربُكِand your anguish أَقضىdeadlier ليto me مِنَthan القَتلِbeing killed وَالأَسرِand captivity
With concern for you, I shall meet my Creator on the day I stand before Him,
For my sake may my Creator on the day I meet Him
And your anguish is deadlier to me than death and captivity.
Replace your anxiety with reward for my death and capture
وَإِنand if لَمnot يَكُنthere is قبرٌa grave فَأَحسَنُthen better مَوطِناًas a dwelling
مِنَthan القَبرِthe grave لِلفِتيانِfor young men حَوصَلَةُthe crop النَّسرِof the vulture
And if there is no grave, then a better resting place
If there be no tomb, the nest of eagles is best
Than the grave for young men is the vulture's crop.
For the youth than any grave or burial place
