أَمُستَنصِراًO seeker of aid بِالصَّبرِthrough patience قَدindeed دُفِنَhas been buried الصَّبرُpatience
مَعَwith الحسَنِal-Hasan المَأمولِin whom hopes are placed إِذwhen ضَمَّهُembraced him القَبرُthe grave
O seeker of aid through patience, patience has been buried
With al-Hasan, in whom hopes were placed, when the grave embraced him.
فَياso, O عَجَباًwonder لِلقَبرِat the grave مِنهُon his account يَضُمُّهُit enfolds him
وَقَدalthough indeed كانَonce was سَهلُthe level ground of الأَرضِthe earth يَخشاهُfeared him وَالوَعرُand the rugged ground
So how astonishing that the grave should enfold him,
Though the earth's level and rugged ground once feared him.
وَماand not ماتَdied ذاكَthat الماجِدُthe noble one القَرمُthe chieftain وَحدَهُby himself
بَلِrather الجودُgenerosity وَالإِقدامُand daring وَالبأسُand martial prowess وَالصَّبرُand patience
And that noble chieftain did not die alone;
Rather, generosity, daring, martial prowess, and patience died too.
وَإِنand if يَكُنِshould be الشَّيطانُSatan زَيَّنَmade seem fair خيرَةًa choice
لِقاتِلِهِto his killer فيin الكُفرِunbelief بَلnay دونهshort of him الكُفرُunbelief
And if Satan has made a choice seem fair
To his killer in unbelief—nay, he outdoes unbelief itself—
فَشَمسُthen the sun of الضُّحىthe forenoon تَرجوhopes لِفُقدانِbecause of the loss of نورِهِhis light
وَبَدرُand the full moon of الدُّجىnight's darkness يبكيهِweeps for him وَالأَنجُمُand the stars الزُّهرُthe radiant ones
Then the morning sun has hope at the loss of his light,
And the full moon of night weeps for him, as do the radiant stars.
