إذا ما نَعى الناعون أَهلَ مَوَدَّتي

إذا ما نَعى الناعون أَهلَ مَوَدَّتي

بَكيتُ عَلَيهِم بَل بَكيتُ عَلى نَفسي

بَكيتُ عَلَيهِم بَل بَكيتُ عَلى نَفسي

Whenever bearers of death-news announce the passing of those I love,

When mourners mourn the loss of those I hold dear

I weep for them—rather, I weep for myself.

I weep, but truly I weep for myself

نَعوا مُهجَة السَلميَّ وَهيَ سَلامَةٌ

نَعوا مُهجَة السَلميَّ وَهيَ سَلامَةٌ

غُلِبتُ عَلَيها فَالسَلامُ عَلى الأُنسِ

غُلِبتُ عَلَيها فَالسَلامُ عَلى الأُنسِ

They announced the death of al-Salmi's lifeblood, Salama;

They mourn the anguish of Al-Salami though she is safe

It was wrested from me; so farewell to companionship.

I am overpowered, so peace unto companionship
