لَماwhen بَداappeared العارِضُthe beard down فيon الخَدِّthe cheek
زادَincreased الَّذيthat which أَلقىI endure منof الوجدِlove's anguish
When beard down appeared on his cheek,
When the beloved's cheek showed dimples
the anguish of love I endure increased.
My passion and longing increased
وَقُلتُand I said لِلعذّالto the reproachers ياO مَنwho رَأىhas seen
And I said to the reproachers, “Who has ever seen
And I said to the tormentor who saw
violets sprouting from roses?”
Violet blossoms rise from rose
