Su'da has departed; is there anyone to comfort you?
My happiness has departed, so is there anyone to make me happy?
She has climbed to the uplands; is there anyone to help you?
And when help was needed, did you rise up? Then who will help me now?

I spend my nights hoping her ghost will visit me,
but how can a dream-phantom visit one who never sleeps?
But how can a specter visit one who does not slumber?

Once I had a spring flowing from the eye's tear-duct,
My eyes were a wellspring of tears,
but it sank away beneath the lonely one's fire, which keeps blazing.
But they have dried up and ignited into flames of anguish.

I watched the star with my gaze when I saw her
I followed the stars with my eyes when I saw them,
draw away to a star's distance—indeed, she is farther.
Retreating far in the distance like stars, no further still.

The Pleiades shine while being a necklace with scattered pearls,
and if the gaze returns to them, scattered pearls.
Even if the eyelids gaze upon it, precious gems will scatter and dissipate.

Al-Jawza' crosses the sky like a young maiden,
And Orion rises like an intoxicated constellation
swaying and reeling from the drunkenness within her.
Swaying from the wine, leaning and bending.

At times you would take her for a prisoner of crime,
You would think it a captive mountain, constrained by sin,
swaying as he walks, though bound in fetters.
Moaning by the pole star, while shackled and chained.

Suhayl appeared, watching for dawn,
Suhail appears, keeping watch over the dawn,
and in him was seen the eye of a sleepless weeper.
So its weeping eye was witnessed hanging low.

I survey the stars as if they were dinars,
dinars, while the sky is chrysolite.
But the sky is made of aquamarine.

I saw in it, while dawn had not failed its appointed coming,
I saw them at dawn - it did not miss its tryst -
lamps, and the green sky was a polished palace.
Like lamps, while the green sky is a towering palace.

A chestnut was led to us from the horses' tethering-ground;
Tethered for us is a reddish steed from the stables,
when it runs, the wind stumbles and stands still.
When it runs, the wind ruffles its mane and it stampedes.

I came upon the lovely carpets of the meadows,
I stood upon the carpets of beautiful gardens,
and their rivers, their banners, take their own courses.
With streams whose ripples are like unsheathed scimitars.

I thought it was Indian swords flashing bare.

adorning with them a fresh, striped mantle.
Bringing cool breezes that clear away heat.

Its redness recalls a blushing cheek.

The ponds have blossomed within it as if they are
maidens' mouths tended with arak twigs.
Forts of maidens, guarded by soldiers on patrol.

as they rejoiced and warbled among the branches.
As they swoon amongst the branches, chirping away.

There one forgets the sorrows of Mosul and calamities,

And worships it - even the most devout of Tayyiba and its mosques.

Araq whose scent is like the breaths of loved ones,
whenever it is mixed, we say: 'Silver and gold.'
We say it is limpid and refined when blended.

His fingers intertwined from the utmost gentleness.

It appears like a full moon walking beside a crescent moon.

Then we prostrate before it wholeheartedly from our love!

I may go out early to hunt, at a hunter's dawn,
One morning I went out hunting,
hurrying upon the wild beasts while they sleep.
I met wild beasts head-on while they fled terrified.

A caravan passed and I said to my steed in jest,
He rushed straight at him, and the wild ass was felled.
“Catch up to it!” So towards the caravan it sped determinedly.

A fleeing gazelle was trapped by my unfettered hands,
forelegs, through whom the beasts' forelegs are bound.
As the claws of beasts grip it and it surrenders.

and their galloping did not avail them as they slumbered.
But it did not benefit from its moans and pleas.

I spun it around until I thought in my swiftness,
I was cut off, with lightning in my palm as I tied a knot.
That I had picked both lightning and thunderbolts in my clinched fist!

My poetry has ridden the steeds of time like an intrepid hero,
and grayness's eye was too bleary to notice my cheek-down.
While the lashes of old age make my vision blur.

Yet the pattern of white hair spreads upon my head.

And guide whoever inclines their ear and seeks guidance.

I am unrivaled in divine unity and justice.
I am utterly devoted to God’s oneness and justice.

I absolve the Lord of creation of any limitation to His creation,
though a transmitter and a transmitted report have strayed concerning His attributes.
While the misguided went astray in His attributes and dependencies.

More disbelieving than Pharaoh in this and more stubborn.

Another claims that the throne exceeds His power in grandeur,
suggesting that God is an embodied body.
And suggests that God is an embodied physical form.

He is the One, the Singular, Most High, Most Glorified.

It is the supreme proof for whoever consolidates and fortifies faith.

See where they have escalated in ascribing divinity!

I would fear the earth's mountains would crumble from it.
I fear the mountains of the earth would shake from it in horror!
يَقولونَthey say أَنَّthat اللَهَGod يَخلِقُcreates سَبَّهُreviling Him
لِيُشتَمًso He may be reviled كَلّاno indeed فَهوfor He أَعلىis higher وَأَمجَدand more glorious
They say that God creates abuse of Himself,
They say that God creates one to insult Him; never!
so that He may be reviled. No! He is higher and more glorious.
He is most High and Glorified above what they presume.
وَقالواand they said أَرادَHe willed الكفرَunbelief وَالظَلمَand injustice وَالزِناand fornication
وَقَتلَand the killing of النَبِيِّينَthe prophets الَّذينَwho تَعَبَّدواworshipped
They said He willed unbelief, injustice, and fornication,
They say He intended disbelief, oppression, and adultery,
and the killing of the prophets who worshipped Him.
And the murder of prophets who devotedly worshipped Him.
فَكَلَّفَso He burdened مَنthose who لَمdid not يَستَطعhave the ability فِعلَthe act of مُحنَقٍone enraged
عَلىat عَبدِهِhis servant حاشاهُfar be He مِمّاfrom what تَزَيَّدواthey exaggerated
So He burdened those unable, in the manner of one enraged
He burdened one who cannot commit wicked deeds
at his servant—far be He from their exaggerations!
By punishing him in Hell eternally for abandoning them.
وَعاقَبهand He punished him عَنfor تَركِهِhis leaving الفِعلَthe act لَمnot يُطَقbe within one's power
عِقاباًa punishment لَهُfor him منof one who بِالجَحيمُin Hell مُخَلَّدُis kept forever
And He punished him for leaving undone an act beyond his power,
They say justice is to task a crippled man with standing
with the punishment of one confined in Hell forever.
And a paralyzed man with running swiftly - when he cannot!
يَقولونَthey say عَدلٌit is justice أَنto يكلِّفَcommand مُقعَداًa cripple
قِياماًstanding وَعَدواًand running مُسرِعاًswiftly وَهوَwhile he is مُقعَدcrippled
They call it justice to command a cripple
While we say that God is Just, and that
to stand and run swiftly, though he is crippled.
He burdens not with more than one can bear.
وَقُلناand we said بِأَنَّthat اللَهَGod عَدلٌis just وَأَنَّهُand that He
يُكَلِّفُenjoins دونَbelow الطَوقcapacity ماwhat هوis أَحمدُmore praiseworthy
We said that God is just, and that He
The sins of all people are by their own doing,
enjoins what is more praiseworthy, below the limit of capacity.
When they commit them apart from Him defiantly.
وَأَنَّand that ذُنوبَthe sins of الناسِpeople أَجمَعall كَسبُهُمtheir own earning
بِاِحداثِهاin creating them منfrom دونِهِapart from Him قَدindeed تَفَرَّدواthey acted alone
And all people's sins are their own earning;
God only intends their moral rectitude,
they alone create them, apart from Him.
Though they corrupt their religion and rebel.
وَلَيسَand does not يُريدُwill اللَهُGod إِلّاexcept صَلاحَهُمtheir well-being
وَإِنeven if أَفسَدواthey caused corruption فيin دينِهِمtheir religion وَتَمَرَّدواand rebelled
God wills nothing but their well-being,
The postponer of punishment still delays while threats continue,
even if they corrupt their religion and rebel.
To fulfill all that they were promised, in deed.
وَيُرجىءُand postpones ذاthe adherent of الارِجاءُpostponement وَالقَولُwhile the pronouncement وارِدhas come

بِاِنجازِهconcerning His fulfillment of كلَّall الَّذيthat which قَدalready تُوُعِّدواthey were threatened with
The advocate of postponement delays, though the pronouncement declares
I sincerely praise the Prophet Muhammad
His fulfillment of all that they have been threatened with.
And his progeny, from whom comes the Prophet Muhammad.
وَأخلَصُand I devote مَدحيmy praise لِلنَبِيِّto the Prophet محمَّدٍMuhammad
وَذريَّةٍand to a lineage مِنهاof which النَبِيُّthe Prophet مُحَمَّدُMuhammad
I dedicate my praise to the Prophet Muhammad,
A prophet who upheld the faith when it was leaning,
and to a lineage that includes the Prophet Muhammad.
And weakened the canal of disbelief while it was strengthening.
نَبِيٌّa prophet أَقامَwho set upright الدينَreligion وَالدينُwhile religion مائِلwas leaning
وَأَوهىand weakened قَناةَthe spear-shaft of الكُفرَunbelief وَهيwhile it تشدَّدُgrew strong
A prophet who set religion upright when it was leaning,
Without him the depths of misguidance would not have been exposed,
and weakened unbelief's spear-shaft as it stiffened.
And the aims of truth would not have been known.
فَلَولاهُbut for him لمwould not يُكشَفbe lifted سجافُthe curtain of ضَلالَةٍerror

وَلَولاهُand but for him لمwould not يُعرَفbe known منof الحَقِّtruth مَقصَدُa goal
But for him, the curtain of error would not have been lifted,
He called and guided, delivering from the grip of ruin,
and but for him, no goal of truth would have been known.
As God blessed him throughout his rest.

He called and guided, rescuing from destruction's hand;
He bequeathed leadership to the best of men, his cousin,
may God bless him as long as Farqad endures.
Though his enemies opposed him, but they did not find guidance.
وَأَوصىand entrusted his charge إِلىto خَيرِthe best of الرِجالmen اِبنthe son of عَمِّهhis paternal uncle

He entrusted his charge to the best of men, his cousin,
All the goodness that was dispersed in ruin, converges in him -
though enemies opposed him over this and were not guided.
So appraise him! I enumerate and detail it.

In him gathered what lay scattered amid destruction,
He was granted precedence in Islam, as it was surrendered to him,
of goodness—count it, for I shall enumerate.
Apart from a nation that harbors enmity towards him belligerently.

His precedence in Islam has been conceded to him,
He struggled against enemies, initially and repeatedly,
except by a faction torn apart by hatred of him.
While others alongside him would waver and retreat.

He fought the enemies, at first and once again,
He is the full moon during times of strife and otherwise,
while others balked at battle.
While his sword fulfills its obligations amidst the clamor of war.

In Uhud, men fought with his sword
Yet you scatter like ostriches.
Blackening the face of disbelief while it blackened their own.

On the day of Hunayn, some of you felt anguish at fleeing,
blackened unbelief's face, as he was raised to mastery.
While his blade was the wrath of warriors, unsheathed and perilous.

On the day of Hunayn, some of you longed to flee,
Ali! Ali! In all tribulations
while his keen sword was Indian steel with sharp edges.
Though your birth pained them, so they betrayed you.
عليّAli عَلِيّexalted فيin المَواقِفthe encounters كُلِّهاall of them

Ali is exalted in every encounter,
Ali, brother of the best of prophets - So hush!
yet your birth has betrayed you regarding him.
Or gain insight, for guidance is nearer and more direct.
عَليAli أَخوthe brother of خَيرthe best of النَبِيّينَthe prophets فَاِخرسَواso be silent

Ali is brother to the best of prophets: be silent,
Ali, his mention flies with every bird,
or gain insight, for right guidance is nearer and straighter.
While his enemies stand and testify for him involuntarily.
عليٌّAli لهhas فيconcerning الطَيرِthe bird ماthat which طارَspread abroad ذِكرُهُits fame

Ali has, concerning the bird, what has flown abroad in fame,
Ali, the verse “Is there indeed” has text regarding him,
and his enemies upheld it, bearing witness.
Despite your aversion - so turn away adamantly!
عَليAli لَهُhas فيin هَلhas? (interrogative) أَتىcome ماwhat تَلوتُمُyou have recited

Ali has, in 'Has There Come,' what you have recited,
He spent the night on the Prophet’s mattress boldly
in spite of your noses—go your separate ways!
While they gathered threatening and warning.
وَباتَand he spent the night عَلىon فَرشِthe bed of النَبِيِّthe Prophet تَسَمُّحاًfreely offering

He spent the night on the Prophet's bed, freely offering
He never knew idolatry while people prostrated before them,
his life's blood, when they rallied and threatened.
As he followed the Prophet, singularly devoting himself to God.
وَماand never عَرفhe acknowledged الأَصنامَthe idols وَالقَومُwhile the people سُجَّدٌwere prostrate

He never acknowledged idols, while the people prostrated themselves
He made him as his successor (caliph) amongst his family,
to them, and he followed the Prophet affirming God's unity.
Like Aaron was to Moses - so investigate and ascertain!
وَصَيَّرهand he made him هارونَهhis Aaron بَينَamong أَهلِهِhis people

He made him his Aaron among his people,
He assumed leadership of people but did not declare supremacy over them,
like Moses' Aaron; investigate and find confirmation.
Except for those who demonstrate hostility and enmity.

He governed people's affairs without asking them to release him,
He was not in need of others’ knowledge,
though an officeholder may sometimes doubt.
When people were perplexed regarding religious rulings.

He had no need for another's knowledge,
Revelation did not come back to him after verses were revealed,
when others needed help in judgments and were left bewildered.
While you shunned them, turning your visions away aloofly.

No surah was recalled from him once he had set out;
The door of the best mosque was not closed to him,
lower your eyes before it, and scatter.
While their doors were closed to him obstructively.
وَلاand not سُدَّwas barred عَنfrom خَيرِthe finest of المَساجِدِmosques بابُهُhis door

His door into the finest of mosques was not barred,
His wife, Fatima, is the best and most virtuous of women
while their doors into it were then being closed.
For the most virtuous and excellent man - her merit is undeniable.

His wife, al-Zahra', is the finest noble daughter
The path of glory extended through both her sons al-Hasan and al-Husayn -
of the finest noble man; her excellence cannot be denied.
Without them glory would have no legacy.
وَبِالحَسنَينand through Hasan and Husayn المَجدُglory مَدَّspread رَواقَهُits pavilion

Through Hasan and Husayn, glory spread its pavilion;
From them branched light into the earth,
but for them, no place would remain for glory to appear.
So for God there are lights that continue emanating.

Lights branched out from them across the earth;
They are brilliant proofs made manifest,
God's are the lights that appeared, ever renewed.
And lamps of God that can never be extinguished.

They are the radiant proofs that have become clear,
I declare allegiance to you, O family of Muhammad,
and God's lamps that never go out.
While you are the religion’s pillars and reservoirs of knowledge.

I give you my allegiance, O household of Muhammad,
And I dismiss those who harbor enmity towards you - they are blind,
and each of you is a Farqad for religion and knowledge.
Opposing what was your blessed birth.

I forsake whoever opposes you, blind from birth,
When he hears the magic of my poetry's enchanting eloquence,
his unworthy birth showing openly upon him.
He nearly collapses from the intensity of sorrow.

When he hears the enchantment I have woven,
To you, family of Taha (Prophet Muhammad) and Yasin (Quranic Chapter), I send praise
he is almost stricken in the heart by the intensity of grief.
That permeates the farthest lands and provides aid.

Ibn Abbad sought closeness to the family of Ahmad through it,
that descends to the farthest lands and climbs into the uplands.
So that Ahmad may intercede for him on Judgement Day.

With it, Ibn Abbad sought the family of Ahmad,
Sing poetically, O Meccan, composing excellently -
so that Ahmad might intercede on the Day of Resurrection.
For none attains precedence except the most excellent composer!
