My soul is enamored with the people of the cloak

وَالنَفسُ عَمّا تُريدُ مصدوفَه
For some time I have been drawn by love of al-Ghari,
I have been tempted by the love of the lovely one for a long time
Yet the soul is kept from what it desires.
And my soul is preoccupied from what it desires

Convey my greetings there to al-Radi, and say:
Convey my greetings to her, Ar-Ridha, and say
My creed is enfolded in devotion.
My doctrine of loyalty is concealed

I have settled in a town whose foes of the Prophet's family
I stayed in a town whose people
Have origins well known among the Jews.
Their origins with the Jews are well known

The people of Najaf have become disbelievers
Tainted and branded with ugliness.
Repugnant to all that is ugly and disdained

I defend a family whose virtues
I defend the family whose beauty
Stand where the radiant stars are.
Is like the blossoming of the stars, halted

You are the cords of certainty to which I cling,
You are the ropes of certainty that I clung to
Clear and familiar in faithfulness.
Clear proofs of loyalty and devotion

The son of Hind and his kin are not superior,
The son of Hind and his people are not nobler
So long as a sea wets a tuft of wool with its water.
Than the sea foam with its wool

His community is the worst community ever known;
His nation is the worst nation known
May it never cease to be surrounded by torment.
Never ceasing to be laden with punishment

He gives his followers drink from the Prophet's cup,
He will let his Shia drink from the cup of the Prophet
While the faction hostile to the Prophet's family is kept back.
While the faction of disbelievers is blinded

I would ransom him—a sun whose light is close at hand,
I sacrifice him, a sun whose light nations
It has been kept above ever being eclipsed.
Have been cleansed never to be eclipsed

How often they concealed his virtues out of hatred,
How they concealed hatred of his superior merits
Yet they stood revealed like the morning.
Yet they appeared at dawn uncovered

And they withdrew into madness, in grief,
And they turned away in sorrow and grief
With souls that never cease to be afflicted.
With souls that are always anguished

How often they sought to rival him, and he sent their hands back
How they reviled him yet he repelled their hands
Shackled and bound in humiliation.
Fettered by pettiness and stinginess

They are cattle—say yes—and they are livestock,
They are cattle, say yes, and yes they are
They have been fattened for the swords.
Made to be slaughtered by swords

Indeed, Ibn Abbad has sought refuge with one
That the son of Abbad sought refuge in Him
Who keeps cares turned away from him—
Who keeps worries away from him

And let me not die in longing for Kufa
