ياO أَيُّهاyou (vocative) القاضيthe judge الَّذيwho نَفسيmy soul لَهُfor him
يا أَيُّها القاضي الَّذي نَفسي لَهُ
مَعdespite قُربِnearness عَهدِtime لِقائِهِmeeting him مشتاقَهyearning
مَع قُربِ عَهدِ لِقائِهِ مشتاقَه
O judge, for whom my soul
Oh You who my soul yearns to see
yearns, though our meeting was so recent.
Though we met not long ago, how I long for thee
أَهديتُI offered as a gift عطراًperfume مِثلlike طيبِthe fragrance of ثنائِهِpraise of him
أَهديتُ عطراً مِثل طيبِ ثنائِهِ
فَكَأَنَّماso it is as though أُهديI offer as a gift لَهُto him أَخلاقَهhis virtues
فَكَأَنَّما أُهدي لَهُ أَخلاقَه
I offered perfume as fragrant as the praise you receive;
I send perfume, sweet as your praise to me
so it is as though I offer you your own virtues.
As though offering your noble ways, my gift to thee
