إِذاwhen المُشكِلاتُdifficulties تصدَّينَconfront ليme
كَشَفتُI uncover حَقائِقَهاtheir true natures بِالنَظَرthrough reflection
Whenever difficulties set themselves against me,
When difficulties confront me,
I uncover their true nature through reflection.
I uncover their true natures through reflection.
وَاِنand if بَرَزتappears فيin محلِّthe place of الصواcorrectness (word continues)
بِ(completes 'correctness') عَمياءُa blind enigma لاnot تَجتَليهاdiscern it الفِكَرthoughts
And even if they emerge in a place of concealment,
And if, in the place of truth, there appears
in blind obscurity that minds cannot unveil,
a blind enigma that thought cannot discern,
مقنَّعَةveiled تَختَفيit hides بِالشكوكamid doubts
وَضَعتُI set عَلَيهاupon it حسامَthe keen sword of النَظَرreflection
veiled, hiding amid doubts,
veiled, hiding amid doubts,
I bring down upon them reflection’s keen sword—
I bring reflection's sword to bear upon it:
لساناًa tongue كَشَقشَقَةlike the throat-sac of الأَرحَبِيِّthe Arhabi camel
أَوor كَالحُسامِlike the keen sword اليَمانِيYemeni الذَكَرof hard steel
a tongue like the swelling roar of an Arhabi camel,
a tongue like an Arhabi camel's throat-sac,
or like a keen, stalwart Yemeni blade.
or like a Yemeni sword of hard steel.
وَلَستُand I am not بِذيone with وَقفةٍhesitation فيamong الرِجالmen
أُسائِلُI ask هذاthis one وَذاand that one ماwhat الخَبَرthe news
I am not one to stand hesitant among men,
And I am not one to stand hesitant among men,
asking this man and that, “What is the news?”
asking this one and that, 'What is the news?'
وَلكِنَّنيbut I مِدرَهُan eloquent champion الأَصغَرينِof the two lesser organs (heart and tongue)
أَقيسُI judge بِماby what قَدalready مَضىhas passed ماwhat غَبَرremains to come
Rather, I master the two small ones—heart and tongue—
But I am a champion in heart and tongue;
judging what remains by what has passed.
I judge what is to come by what has passed.
