بَعدتَyou went far away فَطعمُso the taste of العَيشِlife عِنديَto me علقَمُbitter colocynth
وَوَجهُand the face of حَياتيmy life مُذsince تَغَيَّبتَyou vanished أَرقَمُa speckled serpent
You have gone far away, so life's taste to me is bitter colocynth.
And since you vanished, my life's face is a speckled serpent.
فَماso what لَكَis with you قَدindeed أَدغَمتَyou merged قُربكَyour nearness فيinto النَوىseparation
وَوُدُّكand your love فيin غَيرِother than النِداءِthe vocative مُرَخَّمُtruncated
Why, then, have you merged your nearness into separation,
While your love is truncated, though not in a vocative call?
