O Abu al-Ala, rejoice at our arrival!
For we have arrived on long-necked Mahri camels.
هذاthis وَكانَand it had been بَعيداًunlikely أَنthat أُراجِعُكُمI would return to you
عَلىamid التَعاقُبthe alternation بَينَbetween البيضِthe white days وَالسودِand the black nights
Here we are, though it had seemed unlikely I would return to you,
amid the alternation of white days and black nights,
مِنfrom بَعدماafter قربتdrew near بَغداذBaghdad تَطلُبُنيseeking me
وَاِستَنجَزَتنيَand pressed me to fulfill بِالاِهوازِin Ahwaz مَوعوديwhat I had promised
after Baghdad had drawn near, seeking me,
and, while I was in Ahwaz, pressed me to fulfill my promise,
وَراسَلَتنيand wrote to me بِأَنsaying بادِرhasten لِتَملكَنيso you may possess me
وَيَجريَand may flow الماءُthe water الجودcopious فيthrough العودِthe wood
and written to me: 'Hasten, that you may possess me
and copious water may flow through the wood.'
فَقُلتُso I said لاno بُدَّescape منfrom جيٍّJayy وَساكِنِهاand its dweller
وَلَوand even if رَدَدتُI regained شَبابيmy youth خَيرَthe finest مَردودِthing restored
So I said: 'I cannot do without Jayy and its dweller,
even if I regained my youth, the finest thing restored.
فَإِنَّfor indeed فيهاin it أَودّائيmy dear friends وَمعتَمِديand my mainstay
وَقُربُهاand nearness to it خَيرُthe best مَطلوبٍthing sought وَمَنشودِand longed for
For my dear friends and my mainstay are there,
and nearness to it is the finest thing sought and desired.
أَلَستُam I not أَشهَدُbeholding اِخوانيmy brothers وَرُؤيَتُهُمand the sight of them
تَفيis equal in worth بِمُلكto the kingdom of سُلَيمانSolomon بنson of داودِDavid
Do I not behold my brothers? And the sight of them
is worth the kingdom of Solomon son of David.'
