Good fortunes whose course leaves Jupiter bewildered,

and which elude the astrologer's reckoning.

And how many a scholar you have revived, scholar after scholar,

when they had become like crushed dry brush.

So, by God, were it not for God, mankind would say of you

what Christians say of the Messiah, son of Mary.

Virtues—if they were released and poured forth upon mankind,

your eyes would never behold the face of anyone censured.

Nay, rather, if they were favored with those virtues' alms,

your ears would never hear mention of anyone reproached.

And if I said that God had not created mankind

for anyone but you, I would feel neither scruple nor guilt.
