وَأَعيَنَand a wide-eyed beast كَالذَرِّيِّlike the dharrī (meaning uncertain) فيin سَفَلاتِهِits lower parts
وَأَعيَنَ كَالذَرِّيِّ في سَفَلاتِهِ
سَوادٌblackness وَأَعلىand the upper part ظاهرsurface اللَونِthe color واضِحbright
سَوادٌ وَأَعلى ظاهر اللَونِ واضِح
And a wide-eyed beast, like the dharrī, in whose lower parts
With eyes like beads deep-set in their sockets,
there is blackness, while its upper surface is bright in hue.
Dark below, their surface color clear,
مَوقَّفmarked with contrasting color أَنصافhalves اليَدَينthe two forelegs كَأَنَّهُas though it were
مَوقَّف أَنصاف اليَدَين كَأَنَّهُ
إِذاwhen راحَsets off يَجريrunning بِالصَريمَةthrough the isolated sandy tract رامحُa lancer
إِذا راحَ يَجري بِالصَريمَة رامحُ
Marked halfway down its forelegs, it is as though,
Holding his hands cupped, as if intending
when it sets off running through the sandy tract, it were a lancer.
To scoop up water to drink when he runs.
