طَويتُI put aside مَحموداًMahmud عَلىfor جفوَتِهhis coldness
مُخَلِّصاًridding نَفسِيَmyself خِلّتِهhis friendship
I have put Mahmud aside for his coldness,
I have put Mahmud aside for his coldness,
freeing my soul from his friendship.
Ridding myself of his friendship.
قدَّرتُهُI expected him يقلقto worry مِنover علَّتيmy illness
مِثلlike اِنزِعاجيmy distress كانَhad been منover عِلَّتِهhis illness
I had thought he would worry over my illness,
I thought he would worry over my illness,
just as I had been distressed by his.
Just as I had been distressed by his illness.
لَمdid not يُطرِmention ماwhat بيails me لاno وَلاnor مرَّhe passed بيby me
كَأَنَّas though سَقميmy sickness كانَwas منamong شَهوَتِهِhis desires
He took no notice of what ailed me, nor even came by,
He never mentioned what ailed me—no, nor did he visit me,
as though my sickness were his heart’s desire.
As though my sickness were something he desired.
مَنwhoever لَمdid not يُطالِعنيvisit me عَلىduring عِلَّتيmy illness
اِنif ماتَhe dies لَمwill not أَمضِI go إِلىto تُربَتِهhis grave
Whoever does not look in on me in my illness—
Whoever did not visit me during my illness—
if he dies, I shall not go to his grave.
If he dies, I shall not go to his grave.
