O eye, pour out your tears for the slain martyr.

And leave the cheek like a barren tract of land.

How can weeping bring solace for my lord's killing—

The imam of revelation and interpretation?

And even if the seas became my tears,

They would not suffice me for Muslim ibn Aqil.

They fought God, the Prophet, and their lord—

Ali—when they fought the Messenger's son.

They slew around him lions of the thicket.

Of the lair, and the edge of a polished sword.

They overwhelmed them with stabbing, blows, and slaughter,

And plunder—what a straying from the path!

And Hasan, denied a draught of water,

Between the burning of sword-blades and the burning of thirst,

Bereaved of his son, whom he had clasped as he lay

    Drowned in freely flowing blood.

After him, they bereaved him of a suckling infant.

Have you heard of a suckling slain?

It is the very soul of proclaiming God's greatness and oneness.

It is Husayn's soul, the soul of God's Messenger,

The soul of the Legatee, the soul of the Chaste One.

They slaughtered him like sacrificial animals; O heart,

Shatter for the honored one brought low!

They trampled his body, having already cut it apart.

Woe to them for the punishment of a dreadful day!

They took his head, having hacked him apart.

Indeed, the unbelievers' striving goes astray.

Not my tears, flows in every channel.

When they cried out around the slain one.

As captives, with violence and intimidation.

O what immense anguish at Karbala!

And what a loss, heavy upon the Prophet!

When the gathering for justice is at hand.

And her father, her husband, and her sons

Will be around her, and the dispute will be no small one.

Why, when You are the best giver of redress?'

Stoke it, and seize those guilty of treachery!'

With everlasting punishment and exemplary torment.

O sons of the Chosen One, I wept and made others weep,

And my soul has not yet fulfilled my wish.

Would that my spirit melted into tears, so I could weep

For the humiliation that befell you.

For my allegiance to you is my equipment and provision

On the day I meet you at Salsabil.

I have panegyrics and elegies in your honor,

Preserved as the unambiguous revelation is preserved.

It is glory enough for me, in East and West,

That they say, 'From the words of Ismail.'

And whenever the Nasibis plot against me on your account,

God suffices me, and He is the best guardian.
