يَقولُsay الناسُthe people ليof me رَجلٌa man سَديدٌupright
يَقولُ الناسُ لي رَجلٌ سَديدٌ
وَماand not فعليmy conduct بِفِعلthe conduct of فتىًa youth سَديدِupright
وَما فعلي بِفِعل فتىً سَديدِ
People say I am an upright man,
People say I am a steadfast man,
Yet my conduct is not that of an upright youth.
Yet I care not for the deeds of the steadfast.
إِذاif ما(emphasis) كُنتُI am ماnot أَخشىI fear وَعيداًa threat
إِذا ما كُنتُ ما أَخشى وَعيداً
فَماthen what نَفعيmy benefit مَقاليmy talk بِالوَعيدِof threats
فَما نَفعي مَقالي بِالوَعيدِ
If I fear no threat,
If I were not afraid of threats,
Then what use to me is my talk of threats?
Then of what use are my threats to others?
