ماليwhat is the matter with me? أَرىI see قوماًpeople اِذاwhen سَمِعواthey hear
يَوماًone day بِفضلِof the merit of أَكابِرٍgreat men زُهرradiant
Why is it that I see people who, when they hear
Why do I see people, when they hear
Of the merit of radiant great men one day—
One day of the virtues of the great ones, blossom
فَضلِthe merit of النَبِيِّthe Prophet وَفضلِand the merit of عترتِهِhis kin
نَظرواthey look اليَّat me بِأَعينٍwith eyes خُزرِlooking askance
The Prophet's merit and the merit of his kin—
The virtue of the Prophet and the virtue of his family
Look at me with hostile, sidelong eyes?
Look at me with frowning eyes
قَدindeed أَفصَحواthey made plain نَصّاًexplicitly بِمَولِدِهمof their origins
وَالفَرعُand the branch قَدcan يُنبيtell عنof النَجرِthe rootstock
They have explicitly revealed their origins,
They have clearly expressed a text with their birth
And the branch can tell of the rootstock.
And the branch may indicate the carob tree
فَاِذاthen when ذكرتُI mention لهُمto them فَضائِلَهُhis virtues
قالواthey say شَتَمتَyou have insulted بهاwith them أَباAbu (father of) بكرِBakr
Then, when I mention his virtues to them,
So when I mention their virtues to them
They say, 'With these you have insulted Abu Bakr!'
They say you have insulted Abu Bakr with them
كلٌّeach لهُhe has فَضلٌmerit يَفوزُhe succeeds بِهِby it
وَالنَجمُand the star يقصرُfalls short عنof سَناthe radiance of البَدرِthe full moon
Each has merit by which he succeeds,
Everyone has a virtue by which he succeeds
And the star falls short of the full moon's radiance.
And the star falls short of the brilliance of the full moon

Alas! Where are the foxes that yelped
Compared with a lion with cubs, unbowed and free?
About a fierce lion cub, my father al-Hussein

Men's denial of him has done him no harm,
The denial of men did not harm him
While Ghadir Khumm lays the matter bare.
And the Ghadir of Khumm revealed the matter

We are content with him as master, and leave them
We are content with him as Master and leave them
Vying over Sakhr's son.
Competing over the youth of Sakhra

And a person is with whomever he has loved; so there is no
And man is with whom he loves so there is no
Distinction between them for anyone possessed of reason.
Separation between them for one with a screen
