راسَلتُ مَن أَهواهُ أَطلُبُ زَورَةً

راسَلتُ مَن أَهواهُ أَطلُبُ زَورَةً

فَأَجابَني أَوَ لَستَ في رَمَضانِ

فَأَجابَني أَوَ لَستَ في رَمَضانِ

I sent word to the one I love, asking for a visit.

I wrote to the one I love seeking a visit

So he answered me: “But are you not in Ramadan?”

He replied, "Is it not the month of Ramadan?"

فَأَجَبتُهُ وَالقَلبُ يَخفِقُ صَبوَةً

فَأَجَبتُهُ وَالقَلبُ يَخفِقُ صَبوَةً

أَتَصومُ عن بِرٍّ وَعَن اِحسانِ

أَتَصومُ عن بِرٍّ وَعَن اِحسانِ

So I answered him, my heart throbbing with longing:

I answered, my heart pounding with passion

“Do you fast from kindness and benevolence?

"Do you fast from kindness and doing good?"

صم اِن أَرَدتَ تَحَرُّجاً وَتَعَفُّفاً

صم اِن أَرَدتَ تَحَرُّجاً وَتَعَفُّفاً

عَن أَن تكدَّ الصَبَّ بِالهِجران

عَن أَن تكدَّ الصَبَّ بِالهِجران

Fast, if you seek scrupulousness and self-restraint,

Fast if you wish from meeting out of shyness

from tormenting the lovesick lover with abandonment.

Of revealing the love that rages within

أَو لا فَزرني وَالظَلامُ مُجَلِّل

أَو لا فَزرني وَالظَلامُ مُجَلِّل

وَاِحسَبهُ يَوماً مَرَّ في شَعبانِ

وَاِحسَبهُ يَوماً مَرَّ في شَعبانِ

Or else, visit me while darkness envelops all,

Or don't - come see me while dark covers all

and count it as a day that passed in Sha'ban.”

And count it a day gone by in Sha'ban
