قَولَthe words of اِمرىءٍa man لَمdid not يُفارِقleave عَقلَهُhis reason الوَرَعُscrupulous piety
Say, you two, to whoever zealously championed compulsion,
Say to one who insists on compulsion though striving diligently,
the words of a man whose reason piety has not forsaken:
The words of a man whose piety has not left his reason:
أَلَيسَis ... not? رَبُّكَyour Lord عَدلاًjust فيin قَضِيَّتِهِHis judgment
فَماso not يُكَلِّفburdens نَفساًa soul فَوقَbeyond ماwhat تَسَعit can bear
Is not your Lord just in His judgment?
Is not your Lord just in His decree?
For He burdens no soul beyond what it can bear.
So He would not burden a soul beyond its capacity.
فَكَيفَhow, then? يَأمُرُHe commands بِالتَصديقِto affirm the truth مَنsomeone خَلقَHe created التthe- (start of 'denial')
كذيبdenial (word continuation) فيهِwithin him وَماwhile not يَسطيعُhe can يَرتدعdesist
How, then, can He command one to believe, having created
How then can He command assent in one in whom He created disbelief,
denial within him, when he cannot desist?
When he is not able to refrain?
وَيَبتَديهِand begins by afflicting him بِنيرانٍwith fires مُضَرَّمَةٍset ablaze
هذاthis هوit الكفرُunbelief هذاthis المَوقفُthe stance الشَنِعabhorrent
And begin by afflicting him with blazing fires?
And punish him with raging fires -
This is unbelief; this is the abhorrent stance.
This is unbelief, this is a dreadful standpoint.
لكِنَّهbut He أَقدَرَenabled المَأمورَthe one commanded منout of كَرَمٍgenerosity
وَقدand indeed أَرادَHe willed هُداهُhis guidance وَالوَرىand all people شَرَعُequal
But, out of generosity, He enabled the one He commands,
Rather He empowered the commanded one out of nobility,
and He has willed his guidance; all people are equal.
And intended his guidance, and the way was facilitated.
فَمَنso whoever أَطاعَobeyed حوىattained عَزَّthe glory of الثوابِreward وَلمand not
يَملِكهُmasters him خوفfear وَلمnor يحللsettles بهupon him جَزَعُanguish
Whoever obeys attains the glory of reward, and no
So whoever obeyed found the reward sweet, and was not
fear masters him, nor does anguish settle upon him.
Overtaken by fear, nor overcome by panic.
وَمَنand whoever تنكَّبshunned طرقَthe paths of الرشدِright guidance عاقَبَهُHe punished him
عَلىfor جَريرَتِهِhis offense وَالحَقُّand justice مُتَّسِعُample
And whoever shuns the paths of right guidance, He punishes him
And whoever turned away from the path of right guidance, He punished
for his offense; justice has ample scope.
For his crime, and the truth is vast.
انظُرconsider إِلىto قَولِناour statement تُرشَدyou will be guided وَقَولُهُمُand their statement
وَقتat the time of المَقالةutterance مَنwhoever لَمdid not يَنفِهِreject it بَشِعrepugnant
Consider our statement and you will be guided; as for theirs,
Look to our saying, you will be guided, but their saying
when uttered, whoever does not reject it is repugnant.
Confounds speech in one who does not reject it forcefully.
وَالحَمدُand praise لِلَّهِto God فيin الأَحوالِcircumstances أَجمَعِهاall of them
حَمداًpraise بهِthrough it شَملُthe entirety of ماwhat نَرجوهُwe hope for it يَجتَمِعُcomes together
And praise be to God in all circumstances,
And praise be to God in all circumstances,
praise through which all we hope for is gathered together.
A praise with which hoped-for unity is embraced.
