And when his dwellings carried the beloved far away,
And when the abode of my beloved disappeared
And I was left among those jealous over him on mere suspicion,
And I was kept away from the one I envied in it falsely
تَمَكَّنtook firm hold مِنّيof me الشَوقُlonging غَيرَnot مخالِسٍacting stealthily

Longing took firm hold of me, not by stealth,
Longing took hold of me unrelentingly
Like a Muʿtazilite who has gained mastery over an opponent.
Like an ascetic whose enemy has gained mastery over him
