تَحَجَّرَhas turned to stone فيكَin you طَبعُthe nature الشُحِّof miserliness يَبساًfrom dryness
وَذاكَand that لِأَنَّbecause كَفَّكَyour hand فيهِin it قَبضُa contraction
Your miserly nature has turned to stone from dryness,
In you the trait of stinginess has hardened into stone
and that is because your hand is clenched.
For your hand upon it remains tightly clenched
وَكَمand how often حَرَّكتُهُI stirred it بِشَرابِwith a draught of عَتبٍreproach
فَأَقسَمَso it swore لاnot يُجيبُresponds وَلاand not يَنُضُّyields a drop
How often I stirred it with a draught of reproach,
How much have I stirred it with the wine of reproach
but it swore it would neither respond nor yield a drop.
Yet it swears it will not respond or soften
وَمِنذُand since رَفَعتَyou raised صَوتَكَyour voice ليto me دَليلاًas a sign
فَكانَso there was لِنَصبِfor raising قَدرِكَyour standing مِنهُfrom it خَفضُa lowering
And since you raised your voice as a sign to me,
And ever since you raised your voice against me as proof
it lowered the standing you sought to raise.
The consequence was that your status in my eyes was lowered
عَلِمتُI knew بِأَنَّthat رَأسَكَyour head فيهِin it خِلطٌa bodily humor
غَليظٌthick لاnot يُحَلُّis dissolved وَلاand not يُفَضُّis broken up
I knew that your head contained a bodily humor,
I realized that your mind was confused
thick, which cannot be dissolved or broken up.
Thick and not to be loosened or softened
وَمَنand whoever تَكُare هَذِهِthese الأَعراضُthe symptoms فيهِin him
وَلَمand has not يُعرَفbeen recognized لَهُfor him بِالعَذلِthrough reproach عِرضُhonor
And whoever has these symptoms in him,
He who has these symptoms
and in whom reproach reveals no honor—
And no nobility is known of him
فَكَيفَso how أَرومُI seek صِحَّتَهُhis health بِعَتبيwith my reproach
وَلَمand has not يَخفِقthrobbed لَهُfor him بِالجودِwith generosity نَبضُa pulse
how can I seek his recovery with my reproach,
How can I hope to cure him with my reproach
when no pulse in him has throbbed with generosity?
When no pulse of generosity beats within him
